These angel food cake recipes are proof that delicious desserts don't have to be complicated! From easy 2-ingredient cakes to creamy layered desserts and quick mug cakes, these are some of the simplest treats you'll ever make.

Angel food cake recipes are some of my favorite desserts, and some of the most popular videos on my Super Easy Recipes YouTube channel. They always turn out light, fluffy and delicious, and there are so many different ways to make super simple desserts with angel food cake – everything from a simple fruit-filled cake to quick mug cakes, layered desserts, and easy no-bake treats.

Angel food cake has always been a great choice to bring at family gatherings, potlucks, church dinners, and holiday meals. It seems like everyone loves it! It’s light enough for summer, but it also works well with all kinds of seasonal flavors throughout the year. Add berries in the summer, apples in the fall, or chocolate anytime, and you have an easy dessert everyone enjoys.

I always keep a few boxes of angel food cake mix in the pantry because it’s so handy to just grab one when I need a quick dessert. Mix it with pie filling and you can have a cake in the oven in just a few minutes. Use it as the base for layered desserts, trifles, and parfaits, and nobody will guess how little effort it took to put together.

In this collection you’ll find several easy angel food cake recipes that use simple ingredients and don’t require complicated baking skills. There are fruity cakes, chocolate versions, creamy make-ahead desserts, individual mug cakes, and even a frozen ice cream pie. Most of these recipes use ingredients you probably already have on hand, making them perfect for busy days when you need something sweet without making a special trip to the store.

If you love easy dessert recipes that are simple, inexpensive, and family-friendly, these angel food cake recipes are the kinds of desserts you’ll make again and again. They’re easy enough for beginners, quick enough for busy schedules, and tasty enough that people will think you spent a lot more time in the kitchen than you actually did!

Ingredients

1 box angel food cake mix (just add water type)
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. vanilla (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix package directions.
  2. Place the angel food cake mix and cocoa powder in a large bowl. Mix until evenly combined.
  3. Add the amount of water called for on the cake mix box, and vanilla, if desired. Beat until well blended and fluffy.
  4. Pour the batter into an ungreased angel food cake pan or the pan recommended on the package.
  5. Bake according to the package directions, or until the top is golden brown and springs back when lightly touched.
  6. Cool completely as directed on the package before removing from the pan.
  7. Slice and serve plain, or top with whipped cream, fresh berries, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Be careful not to get any grease or oil in the bowl or pan, as it can prevent the cake from rising properly.
  • This cake is light, fluffy, and has just the right amount of chocolate flavor without adding extra ingredients.

  • Author: Tawra Kellam

Ingredients

1 prepared angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 (21 oz.) can pie filling (cherry, peach, or blueberry)
1 (3.4 oz.) package instant vanilla pudding mix
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup sour cream
whipped topping

Instructions

  1. Place half of the angel food cake cubes in the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish or large serving bowl.
  2. Spoon the pie filling evenly over the cake cubes.
  3. Top with the remaining angel food cake cubes.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine pudding, milk and sour cream, beating well.
  5. Pour the pudding mixture over the cake.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 5 hours, or overnight, to allow the flavors to blend and the cake to soften.
  7. Serve topped with whipped topping.

Notes

  • Cherry, blueberry, and peach pie fillings all work well, so use your family’s favorite.
  • For a prettier presentation, reserve a few spoonfuls of pie filling to garnish the top before serving.
  • This dessert is even better the next day, making it perfect for potlucks, holidays, and family gatherings.

These quick little mug cakes are ready in about a minute and are perfect when you want a small dessert without baking an entire cake. Mix up a batch of the dry ingredients once, and you’ll have instant cake whenever a craving strikes!

  • Author: Tawra Kellam

Ingredients

Cake Mix Base

  • 1 box one-step angel food cake mix
  • 1 box cake mix, any flavor

For Each Mug Cake

  • 3 Tbsp cake mix blend
  • 2 Tbsp water

Instructions

  1. In a large zip-top bag or airtight container, combine the angel food cake mix and the cake mix. Shake or stir until thoroughly blended.
  2. For each serving, place 3 tablespoons of the cake mix blend in a microwave-safe mug or small bowl.
  3. Stir in 2 tablespoons of water until smooth.
  4. Microwave on high for 1 minute. The cake should be set and spring back lightly when touched.
  5. Let cool for 1 minute before eating. Then, you have your own instant individual little cake!

Keep the remaining mug cake mixture stored in the Ziploc bag or container so it’s handy anytime.

Notes

Serving Ideas

  • Top with whipped topping.
  • Add fresh berries or sliced bananas.
  • Drizzle with chocolate syrup or caramel sauce.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Notes

This recipe is called 3, 2, 1 Cake because it’s easy to remember:

  • 3 tablespoons cake mix blend
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 minute in the microwave

One of the mixes must be angel food cake mix, but the second mix can be almost any flavor. Try chocolate, lemon, strawberry, red velvet, spice, carrot cake, butter pecan, or funfetti for endless combinations.

Store the remaining dry mix in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature. No refrigeration is needed.

Tip: Microwave times may vary slightly. If the center still looks wet, microwave in 5-10 second intervals until done.

Allergy Note: Angel food cake mix contains egg whites, so this recipe is not suitable for those with egg allergies.

This Berries and Cream Dessert recipe looks fancy, but it couldn’t be easier to make! Fluffy cream, fresh berries, and soft cake come together in a quick no-bake dessert that’s perfect for summer gatherings, holidays, or anytime you need an easy treat.

  • Author: Tawra Kellam

Ingredients

1 loaf (10 oz.) pound cake or angel food cake, cut into cubes
2 (3 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese, softened
2 cups marshmallow creme (about 1 large jar)
4 cups fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or a combination)

Instructions

  1. Divide the cake cubes evenly among 8 dessert dishes, parfait glasses, or small bowls.
  2. Top each serving with fresh berries.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  4. Fold in the marshmallow creme until well combined and fluffy.
  5. Spoon or pipe the cream cheese mixture over the berries.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use any combination of berries you have on hand, or substitute sliced peaches, mandarin oranges, or other fresh fruit.
  • For a pretty presentation, reserve a few berries to sprinkle on top just before serving.
  • Angel food cake makes a lighter dessert, while pound cake creates a richer, more decadent treat.
  • This recipe can easily be halved for fewer people.

Tip: For an easy party dessert, layer the ingredients in a large glass bowl or trifle dish instead of individual servings.
