Rice Krispy Treats with a Twist

Is it too hot to bake?

  • Drag out the good old homemade Rice Krispy Treats recipe for the Fourth of July but try adding a new twist. Add red or blue food coloring to the melted marshmallows and then, using a large star cookie cutter, cut them into stars to pile high on a plate.

Get out some of those red paper plates you bought on sale after Christmas or Valentine’s Day to serve your treats on the Fourth of July.

  • Here’s another twist to the Rice Krispy Treats: Add 1/3 cup peanut butter to the melted marshmallows and substitute frosted flakes for the Rice Krispies. You now have Tony the Tiger Treats.

  • Instead of serving the same old Rice Krispy Treats, add things like chocolate chips, M&M’s or nuts. You can also use different cereals like Honey Nut Cheerios, Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles. Of course, try to buy these in the off-brands to save.

  • You can also drizzle a little melted chocolate, butterscotch, white chocolate or peanut butter chips over the top of homemade Rice Krispy Treats. By drizzling things on top of cakes or cookies like this you can save by using less compared to spreading it all over.

  • Rice Krispy Pops – Sometimes Rice Krispy Treats can get sticky and gooey in the heat and humidity of summer so, for your next outside get-together, try rolling them into balls and stick a popsicle stick into each one. You could also roll them in sprinkles, candies or melted chocolate.

The sky is the limit. You can pretty much melt the margarine and marshmallows and throw anything in. Use up the last bits of leftover cereals, nuts, candies, sprinkles, etc.

Basic Rice Krispy Treats

1/4 cup margarine
4 1/2 cups (10 1/2 oz. pkg.) marshmallows
6 cups Rice Krispies

Melt margarine and marshmallows in large pan. Add cereal and pour into a well greased 9×13 pan.

You can also make them in the microwave. Put margarine and marshmallows into a glass bowl and microwave for 45 seconds on high until marshmallows melt. Add cereal and pour into a greased pan.

My family loves rice crispie treats! It seems like my crew always opens 3 or 4 different kinds of cereal and then we end up with 3 or 4 different 1/2 bowls of cereal that no one wants to finish, so I use the “bottoms of the box” in my crispy treats. Its a great way to use up a dab and the kids think the crispy treats are fun with all the different cereals and colors in them.

Jill you are making me hungry for these. Thanks for all the wonderful add-in ideas. Very creative. A nice low calorie treat. I like the making them into balls idea too.

  • Bea

i love rice krispy treats (homemade version) .. but whenever i make it i have the hardest time stirring the krispies in the marshmallow stuff … and they usually come out looking rather lumpy .. hehehe :D .. delicious .. but lumpy .. and one time i didnt add enuff krispies and it was too gloppy-like with all the marshmallow sauce .. my son in law and son loved it .. me and my daughter didnt care too much for it .. i thought it was rather too sweet ..
i think the coco krispies and pb and marshmallows would be good tho ..
i had them made with cheerios, m&m’s, peanuts and a tiny bit of marshmallows and they were good ..
its a cheap treat that both kids and adults like ..
    :D

  • When I was in college, the student union cafeteria served Rice Krispie treats with coconut in them. To this day, those are the best Rice Krispie treats I have ever eaten! We almost always have some leftover coconut in our freezer from this or that baking project, so it’s easy to grab a handful and add it to the treats. Love the idea of dying the marshmallows red or blue, too!

Once on a spur of the moment need for cookies my grand daughter and I devised and made the Crispy treats and added coconut.
We named them “Coca Doodle Doos, and they were a hit at her school party!

Jill, Last night I made some rice crispy treats and rolled them into a ball in the palm of my hands, like a snowball, and then rolled them in rainbow sprinkles. They are so pretty and festive looking. They look like fireworks do in the sky when they explode into all those colors. Real 4th of July looking and they taste great. Thanks for the ideas.

    • Just imagine all the different things you can roll them in from little candies or like everyone has been talking about even coconut which would give it a snow ball look.

  • Bea

Jill rolling them in coconut sounds terrific. I didn’t think of that!!! I love the way your mind works. You have a gift of creativity. Just think of how they would look for Christmas? Wow.

I wanted to tell you Jill that I wanted to try Coco Krispies with coconut. I made them into “snowballs” and then rolled them in coconut. They are so good. I know you would like them too. Also, for the 4th of July you can get the Berry Blue Jello and put some Kool-whip on top and a strawberry for red, white and blue and then make the rice krispy treats and make them into balls and roll them in rainbow sprinkles and that would look so pretty and your kitchen wouldn’t be overheated for an oven. I also tryed rolling the rice krispies in chocolate sprinkles and they are great too.

I started making these 48 years ago with the receipe on the Kellogs Rice Crispies Box, and it consisted of 1 stick of BUTTER, 1 pkg marshmallows, and 6 cups of Rice Krispies. I made them last week, and they NEVER got hard. They were so irresistable that they were gone in 3 or 4 days.

I use a little more butter too, so they don’t dry out as fast. I made half a batch and used 1/4 cup butter. If I were to make a full batch, I would use 1/2 cup butter. I don’t eat them very fast, so in order not to dry out and get hard, I use more butter, and they are so good.

  • Bea

I made rice krispie treats with caramel/vanilla marshmallows, and they are so good with chocolate sprinkles.

  • ginny

We dip half of the rice krispie treat in melted chocolate.

I like these ideas! I try to have a few cookie options on hand which don’t involve heating up the kitchen in summer. You have just given me more ideas. Lili at creativesavv.blogspot.com has a good microwave brownie recipe. I like to make traditional no-bakes (with cocoa and oatmeal) on the stovetop. I also have a recipe variation on rice krispie treats called Scotcheroos–it involves peanut butter and corn syrup in with the rice krispie layer, and melted chocolate chips/butterscotch chips spread on top. These are richer than traditional RK treats but way yummy.
