I want to make this recipe(my daughter simply loves Hot Chocolate in the morning, but I need some clarification on one of the ingredients. When you say non dairy creamer, do you mean the powder non-dairy creamer, or something different. If you could please let me know either in your newsletter, on facebook, or on your blog that would be great.
By the way, I simply love Dining on a Dime. Great recipes and tips.
Thanks so much for teaching me the ways to be frugal.

Sara yes it is the powdered non dairy creamer. I use just a generic kind. I make hot chocolate with milk and Nestles a lot and will add a spoonful or two of the powdered non dairy creamer to each mug when I make it that way and it makes the cocoa extra creamy.

We are about to make our second batch of Hot Chocolate mix.
Not only is this MUCH less expensive than regular hot chocolate, the kids all agree it tastes better!! I think its the pudding mix that sets it apart!
    Thanks for the great recipe.

I am not a big one for the packet hot chocolate stuff myself. I was raised on Nestles quick and milk or making from scratch from baking cocoa but I do like this recipe too and was really surprised at how good it tastes. I am glad you like too. It’s nice to have on hand for days like today when I can’t get to the store, run out of milk but have an urge for cocoa.

we were raised on the nestle’s quik or the can of hershey’s with warm milk .. my mom refused to buy those packets of hot cocoa mix .. she said it was cheaper (she had 5 kids to feed and was a single parent) to make it this other way ..
our friend’s mom (she was a single parent too) would buy the powdered milk adn mix it with the nesquik ..
    it was good too ..
i tell my kids the best lunch we had in the summer was lettuce sandwiches (lettuce on wonder bread and mayo) and homemade lemonade (not too lemony) and for dessert? a slice of watermelon ..

Your lettuce sandwiches reminds me of my great aunt who had about 10 kids during the depression. They lived on nothing but onion sandwiches one winter. I love radish sandwiches with butter too. Oh I wish I hadn’t mentioned them. That sounds so good and I don’t have any radishes and no way I’m going to the store for the next couple of days.

Lettuce on white bread with mayo…lettuce sandwiches. Yum. Guilty of eating a few of these. :) I’ve also had onion sandwiches…onion on white bread with mayo or onion on white bread with mustard…sometimes onion and cheese sandwiches or lettuce and cheese sandwiches. My grandparents also eat a lot of tomato sandwiches, which is of course tomato slices on white bread with mayo. I don’t like tomatoes so I pass on this one. I like anything made from tomato but just not tomato. Lol!

mom would serve Frys cocoa hot chocolate
skim milk powder (we used skim milk so the powder was fine for cocoa)
sugar and water. She had a special pot to make it in even.
Made us feel special when she brought out that pot on cold days.

Fresh bread out of the oven slathered in peanut butter or margarine and homemade jam and a big mug of cocoa.
My hot chocolate never tastes as good so I wish I had her pot. I think that was the secret.

    Here’s another recipe.

    Hot Chocolate Mix
    10 cups dry milk
    2 cups nesquik
    2 cups nondairy creamer
    6 cups powdered sugar
1 cup special dark cocoa powder
    1/4 cup cornstarch

Mix 1/4-1/2 cup mix with 3/4-1 cup hot water.
(You can tweak this by leaving out the nesquik or adding a little salt or cayenne:1-2 teaspoons to the entire batch.Just make sure you mix thoroughly!)

I love recipes you can change over and over again!!!

I discovered your recipe here a couple of years ago. I haven’t purchased “regular” hot cocoa mix since! I love the creamy mouth-feel that the pudding mix gives it. And the kids love it, too! Thanks for sharing the recipe with us.

I spent a lovely weekend in Stowe, VT several years ago and had the best hot chocolate at this little bed and breakfast! I brought a jar of the powdered heaven home and wondered “How did she make this?” It is wonderful to see this recipe (may not be the same one) so I can make my own quick and delicious hot chocolate “from scratch”. I’ve been making it each winter using the recipe on the side of the Hershey’s cocoa can all this time, after I ran out of my VT stash. I’m going to make some in quart jars for friends and attach a small bag of mini-mini marshmallows to the side! Thanks again.

One thing Robin with this recipe or any powdered recipe, even though it has powdered milk in it and calls for water I always use milk when I can. It just makes them all so much better. Also for anyone who need to use regular packets of hot chocolate mix and water add a packet or two of coffee cream to it and use half the water it calls for for a rich creamier drink.

How many servings does this yield? I am making this for gifts for Christmas and want to put them in jars… I can’t find how many jars this will fill?
    Thank you!

This makes a good 16 cups. If ever you need to know how much a recipe makes of something or what size pan to use for the ingredients listed just add up the list of ingredients and it will give you a pretty good idea. For example add the 8 cups of dry milk, 4 cups of sugar etc. with just those 2 ingredients you have 12 cups alone.

My family has made the hot cocoa mix that came with the big Tupperware storage bowl for years. We love this! I’m going to have to try adding a box of pudding mix to it. I love homemade cocoa mix. I always make my nieces and nephews a tub for Christmas to take to college with them. They love it and their roommates do too. Here is the recipe:
    Hot Chocolate Mix
1 pound can of Nestles Quick
1 8-qt. size box of Carnation non-fat dry milk
1 11-oz. jar of dry powdered creamer
    1 pound of powdered sugar

Mix the above ingredients together and store in a labeled container.

To make one mug of cocoa, place 4 rounded Tablespoons of the mix into a large mug. Add 1 cup of boiling water and stir well to dissolve. Top with marshmallows or whipped cream if desired.

This mix is wonderful. Am I the only one who mixes it into coffee? Tastes like a frothy mocha latte! ☕

I made the chocolate mix this year to give as Christmas gifts. It is delish! I got the recipe from your cookbook which I purchased a few years back. I’ve also made the coffee mixes and the movie themed basket. There are many more ideas to choose from. The cookbook itself would also make great gift.
