Ingredients

Units

1 cup olive oil – can be found here *
1 cup avocado oil- can be found here *
1 cup beeswax can be found here *

Instructions

  1. Melt all of the ingredients together.
  2. Stir until the beeswax is melted.
  3. Then pour into molds. These silicone molds work great.
  4. Let the lotion bars set until they are completely firm and pop out of molds.

Ways to use these homemade lotion bars:

  • Keep a lotion bar in a soap dish by the sink in the kitchen and rub it on before doing the dishes so your hands don’t get chapped.
  • Keep a lotion bar in a soap dish next to the bathroom sink and rub it on after washing your hands.
  • Put a lotion bar on your dogs’ paws to keep them from getting chapped in the winter.
  • Put a lotion bar on before a walk to protect your dogs’ paws from snow and ice.
  • Pour the lotion mixture into small molds (about 1-2 inches) and then put in a mint tin for mini lotion bars.
  • Pour the lotion bar liquid into empty chapstick containers for homemade lip balm.
  • Pour the lotion bar mixture into an empty chapstick container for the kids to carry in their coat pockets or backpacks to rub on their dry hands at school.

They will melt in the sun just like chapstick. Treat them as you would chapstick.

A couple of years ago I made a salve with coconut oil & beeswax. It was used for cuts, scratches, itches, etc. Of course now I can’t find the recipe. I did make your recipe & love it for my hands. Do you think I could expand its uses? Thanks

Since these contain oils that can go rancid, and your post on homemade lip balm recommends adding a capsule of vitamin E oil as a preservative, how much vitamin E oil would you recommend adding to this recipe to stave off rancidity?

Have you ever priced it out to see how much a bar these are costing to make?

The actual cost of ingredients are about $.50 -$1.00. But you need to add in cost of packaging which can sometimes cost more than ingredients and it you are doing them for resale the costs of labeling, packaging, book keeping and other things like that so the actual ingredients isn’t a lot but all the other added in. Also if you are thinking of selling them at a craft show you need to add in the cost of a booth and the time spent sitting at the booth.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS IDEA! Now, another question about using a different storage/holding method: do you think it would work if I poured this into a cleaned-up deodorant canister/tube (the kind that you can twist a dial and the deodorant goes up and down)? That way, I could retract it and cap it to put it in my purse, suitcase, garage, car or wherever so it doesn’t get dirty and can easily be handled. If so, it’d be great if you could video the results of that!

    Thanks for a great page!

You would just melt and use it as far as I know. I haven’t used it before.

I would check Google for how to temper mango butter before using it in the recipe, as all butters (cocoa, Shea, etc) can get grainy if not tempered well. Still entirely useable, but not great for gifting or selling if it is full of lumps :)

    Good morning

If I use coconut oil, bo I use the liquid or the solid? Or does it matter?

Ann you can use either in this recipe if you want but you do need to cut back a little on the beeswax because the bar will get too hard. You might want to try this recipe the way it is first though because they are now finding out that coconut oil can be way more drying than the other oils on the skin. I was finding this to be true for me but thought it was my imagination but now they are finding it is the coconut oils that are causing the drier skin. Just a heads up.

These bars are made of oils and waxes and have no soap properties in them.
