Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. hot water
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups all purpose flour
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.
  4. In a small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in the hot water. Add this mixture to the dough along with the salt and mix until combined.
  5. Stir in the flour, chocolate chips, and nuts (if desired).
  6. Drop dough by large spoonfuls (or about 2 tablespoons each) onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing cookies about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are browned and the centers are set.
  8. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Tips for Best Results

  • For softer cookies, remove them from the oven when the centers still look slightly underbaked—they’ll firm up as they cool.
  • For crispier cookies, bake an additional 1–2 minutes.
  • Chilling the dough for 30 minutes helps prevent excessive spreading.
