Grandma
just sent this recipe to a friend.
wasn’t sure if graham crackers were gluten free but she says she can get them so she will try the cookies for her daughter.
is the condenced milk gluten free does anyone know.
too sweet for me so I don’t have any to check.
Susan Maziarz
Yes, the condensed milk is gluten free. The only food substances that contain gluten are grains such as wheat. There are some grains that are gluten free so you would need to check for those. ALL Meat, Veggies, Fruits, Dairy etc. Are ALWAYS Gluten free. So many products on the shelves have a “Gluten Free ” label slapped on them that is a false indication that other brands of Meat, milk, etc might have gluten. So very misleading.
Lee Anne
Condensed milk is just milk cooked down with sugar added. Nothing with gluten so yes it is gluten free.

I grew up on these, and even though I claim that I don’t like coconut, I love these, so go figure. Literally. The figure goes when I eat these :)
Jill
They are to die for that is for sure.
Connie
I use oatmeal instead of coconut flakes. Different but good.

Is there a specific way to layer this? Picture seems to show coconut on top. Do you pour the condensed milk over the top? Does anyone have any tips on making them?
Jill
Melt the butter pouring it in the pan and then start layering the ingredients starting with the first ingredient after the butter. When you get to the milk just pour it over everything as if it were a layer and then end with sprinkling everything with nuts if you are using them. Thee really aren’t too many tips on making them because they are so easy you just layer the grahams (which are like the crust) and start sprinkling everything else. If you accidentally put the chocolate chips and then the coconut it will not make any difference because it all melts together. The reason you see coconut in the picture is sometimes people garnish the top with coconut.

I count six layers. Is there something missing?
They are absolutely delicious, seven layers or not!
Jill
Since you melt the margarine in the pan first that is considered the first layer.

Jill: you’ve made me so happy! For some reason, I absolutely HATE measuring flour (probably cause I always spill it on myself) these sound great. think I’ll make them for the family 4th of july picnic, bet I can make them a day or two ahead, depending on the heat in my kitchen.
Jill
Glad to be of service Donna LOL LOL

Made this once and a hit but lost recipe. I am on special diet but cook for others. Thanks easing my work load!
Jill
Glad you were able to find it Retha. This is one of those to die for recipes. : )

One of my favorite recipes. I do a slightly different variation of this, using peanut butter chips instead of butterscotch chips. Mix melted butter and Graham cracker crumbs and press into pan. Then sprinkle chocolate chips and peanut butter chips in a layer. Sprinkle with coconut flakes, then drizzle condensed milk on top, and then bake. (Some people don’t like nuts.)
