    Units
1 cup baking soda 1/2 cup citric acid 1/2 cup cornstarch 2 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. oil (almond, sunflower, coconut, mineral, canola or baby oil may be used) 2 tsp. water 12 tsp. essential or fragrance oil 1/4 tsp. borax bath safe colorant or food coloring

    Instructions

    1. Mix baking soda, citric acid and cornstarch.
    2. Mix the wet ingredients and the borax.
    3. Slowly add to the dry ingredients, mixing constantly. Mix slowly or it will bubble too much.
    4. Pack the homemade bath bombs mixture into molds; let set for a few minutes and then remove from molds.
    5. Let dry another 24 hours. In humid climates you may need to dry longer.

Use 1-3 per bath. Store in an airtight container. Wrap the homemade bath bombs in cellophane bags for a nice gift.

    Notes

*The mixture is very crumbly and dry. Mix as well as you can and then pack tightly into molds. If the homemade bath bombs won’t hold their shapes, add one teaspoon oil.

If you want to make Bath Seeds instead don’t pack into molds. Just place in a pretty jar and label. Use 2-4 tablespoons per bath.

How To Make A Candy Christmas Wreath

A Christmas Candy Wreath is a simple project the entire family will love! It is festive and kids and guests love cutting a piece of candy when they visit!

Each year on the day after Halloween, I go and buy candy that is marked down to half price* to use to make my Candy Christmas Wreaths. I am telling you about it now so you won’t miss out on the opportunity to get candy for less to make these great gifts.

Since I was little we have hung a candy wreath on our door. When someone came to visit, they could cut a piece of candy from the wreath to take with them when they arrived or left. Kids and adults alike love this tradition.

Some years I have tried to have mine done before Thanksgiving. That way, when we get together on Thanksgiving Day, as a small gift, I give each one of my grown children one to hang on their doors.

I hang mine up the day after Thanksgiving along with the rest of my Christmas decorations. If you are going to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving, this is a great and very different hostess gift to bring.

These also make great gifts for those hard to buy for people on your gift list or for those occasions when you have to buy for a whole family but aren’t quite sure what to get for each member and you’ve given gifts in a jar for the last 5 years. It also saves you money because you aren’t having to buy individual gifts.

Another added benefit is that you can make them early in November and give them out by the end of the month. This means that by the first week of December, you can have some of your gifts totally taken care of. Oh — no wrapping necessary either!

These wreaths are very simple to make and something the kids can easily do. You’ll find complete instructions on what to buy and how to make them below.

*Don’t forget to get candy for your other Christmas recipes during the after Halloween sales. Be creative! I was supposed to use Hershey’s candy bars in my million dollar fudge recipe, but when my daughter found a ton of Hershey’s kisses for 50 cents a bag, I used those instead.

How to Make a Candy Wreath

    1. First, buy your candy. You need to use wrapped candy like Tootsie Rolls, Jolly Ranchers, peppermints, bubble gum, butterscotch candies, etc. How much candy you need depends on the size of wreath you make. Usually for a 12 to 15 inch wreath, I buy enough candy to fill a large mixing bowl to the top.

I make mine with lots of mixed candy but you can make it with all peppermints, all green and red Jolly Ranchers, or whatever you like. Whatever you decide, first place it all into a large mixing bowl.

    2. Cut string into about 3 inch pieces. The lengths don’t have to be exact. Just make them long enough so that they are easy to handle while you tie them around the ends of the candy and then to the ring for the wreath. You need one string for each piece of candy. I don’t sit and count how many I need. I just cut a pile and then make more when I need them.

    3. Take a heavy wire clothes hanger and form it into the size wreath you would like. Cut off the hook part at the top then slightly bend the 2 ends to form small hooks that you can hook together to make a circle. I haven’t checked lately but you might be able to buy a metal circle in the wreath section at your craft store.

    4. After you have made your ring, tie each string to one end of a piece of candy. This is why candy like Toostie Rolls work so well. The little flags of paper on each end make it easy to tie the string to them. Then tie the other end to the wreath ring. Keep pushing the candy together as you go so you have a nice full ring of candy.

    5. When you can’t squeeze one more piece of candy onto the wreath, make or buy a large red bow to place at the top, which will cover the section where you hooked it together.

    6. Tie one end of a ribbon or string to a child’s pair of scissors and then tie the other end to the bottom of the wreath. This pair of scissors is for people to use to cut their own candy.

If you  want you can add this poem to your candy Christmas Wreath.

Friends and neighbors all draw near
For a bit of Christmas cheer
Take the scissors, give a snip
    Then enjoy a candy nip!!

As you can see this is an easy project for kids. I mean what kid wouldn’t love to handle mounds of candy, especially it they get to sneak a piece every once in awhile?

Hang it on your door. Adults and children alike love cutting a piece when they are coming or going or both!

How To Fix Broken Makeup In 30 Seconds

Have you ever broken a favorite makeup, but hesitated to throw it away? Did you know you can fix broken makeup in 30 seconds? Here’s an easy way to fix it!

Have you ever broken a favorite makeup, but hesitated to throw it away? Did you know you can fix broken makeup in 30 seconds? Here's an easy way to fix it!

How To Fix Broken Makeup In 30 Seconds

About 15 years ago, I had a favorite eye shadow and it dropped on the floor and broke. The lid stayed on, so it didn’t go everywhere but it was just a bunch of little pieces.

At the time, we lived out in the middle of nowhere, so just running into town to get more makeup was not an option. My makeup was one that wasn’t even in stores anyway so I couldn’t just pick some up even if I could get to a store.  As I was looking at it and lamenting the loss, I wondered if I could fix it.

I decided to give it a try and it worked PERFECTLY! Once it’s fixed, you never even know that it has been broken. I was able to fix my broken makeup and save myself several dollars and the hassle of trying to find some new makeup to replace it.

    To fix broken makeup:

    1. Crush the makeup with the back of a spoon until it’s a fine powder.
    2. Drip a few drops of rubbing alcohol into the makeup and stir until thoroughly saturated.
    3. Stir with a toothpick to make sure all the makeup is saturated.
    4. Smooth the top with the back of the spoon.
    5. Set the makeup on the counter with the lid open until it dries.
    6. Use as normal!

Watch our video, “How To Fix Broken Makeup” Here:

That’s it!! It’s super easy! I have done this many times over the years and this has never failed. (I’m a huge clutz and I always seem to be dropping my makeup and breaking it!) It works for both blush and eye shadow. You can also use this same method and mix colors to get the color you want. I had 2 blushes that I didn’t like but when I mixed them together, the result was perfect!

How To Start A Garden For Cheap

How To Start A Garden For Cheap

Try these easy tips about how to start a garden! Whether you want to save money on food or you just like the idea of having a garden, this post is for you!

    how to start a garden

How To Start A Garden – Gardening Basics

Most people don’t know this but I went to school for Greenhouse Management and Landscape design. Gardening is my passion and I hate to cook so it’s crazy that I run a website on saving money and that I wrote a frugal cookbook!

A lot of readers ask us how to start a garden so today I’m going to give you a few basic pointers.

    Starting Seeds

You can see how I start my garden seeds here.

    1. Put some soil in a cup or container with a clear lid (like a deli container). Then plant seeds in it and water them. If you are using cups, set them in a large clear container like the kind birthday cakes come in. Use potting soil from the store, NOT top soil, to start them.
    2. Place in a warm spot, like on top of the fridge, for a week or two. You don’t need to take the lid off and you don’t need to water them.
    3. When you see the seeds have sprouted, take off the lid and put it in a sunny spot. If you don’t have a sunny window, you can put them about 10 inches under fluorescent lights.

Grow your own vegetables in a square foot garden

Design or Plan Your Garden Space

Even if you are starting with a container garden, think about how much room and what kind of space you have for a garden. The best book I have read on gardening is Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. If you are new to gardening I would start with just that one book.

Square Foot Gardening tells you how to start a garden in a small area. You can grow a lot of things in just a few square feet of garden area without having to do all the weeding and watering that comes with a normal garden plot. As a side note, he does suggest a specific soil mix he puts in his raised beds when he starts a garden. I just use regular dirt and compost.

how to start a garden with raised garden beds

Here’s a photo of our square foot garden beds.

For the first year, start small. Plant no more than two or three 4×4 ft. plots.

Be sure to clean used pots with soapy Clorox water to make sure any bacteria and disease are killed.

    What to Plant And Where

Most vegetables and herbs need to be planted in full sun. That means the area needs at least 6 hours of sun or more day.

    How To Start A Garden

Of course you must always have a gnome in your garden! :-)

    Buying Plants

To start, you may want to buy plants in flats from your garden centers which is perfectly fine. Here are some things to think about when buying your plants and when you’re deciding what you want and need:

    • Start with easy plants. Herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, carrots, radishes, spinach are all very easy to grow.
    • Read the information on the tags of the plants. Do they need to be planted twelve inches apart. If so and you have a ten foot row available to plant them, that means you can only put ten plants on that row.
Plan to start your garden - Tomato plants like sun.
    • When buying flowers, remember to check and see if they need full shade, full sun, etc. and plant them in those areas. One of the biggest mistakes first time gardeners make is buying a plant because they like it and know where they want it, not realizing that, no matter what they do, a shade plant will die when planted in full sun and a full sun plant won’t grow in the shade.
    • Make sure you plant the plants that need the same amount of water together. Different types of plants need different amounts of watering, so take that into consideration. It helps to locate the plants that need the most water closest to the water faucet so you don’t have to drag a hose a long way if you have a large yard.
    • Less is best when you’re considering how to start a garden. Another mistake people make is buying and planting way more plants than they need. That cute little four inch tomato plant is going to produce more than a couple of tomatoes. I usually plant one plant for each person who eats tomatoes, plus two extra in case some of them die. I don’t can my extra produce. If you want to do that, you will need to plant more.
    • Keep in mind as you are planning your garden, buying plants and plotting your garden spot that some plants need trellises to grow. Fences make great trellises for cucumbers and peas.
    • Start with simple things at first. Cucumbers, radishes, lettuce and squash are some good ones to plant first. I started my first garden with corn. It was a mess and I got almost nothing for all of my work.

How to start a garden with raised beds

    Prepare The Soil

    • Rototill or dig soil, getting rid of rocks, and remove sod and weeds. If you try Square Foot Gardening, you won’t need to rototill– just dig. If you are digging up grass, put it in another area of the yard that you need to patch.
    • Add compost. This will help with drainage and give the plants a boost of nutrients.
    • Lay down newspaper or black fabric garden cloth to help control weeds. I put my weed barrier down and put mulch on top before planting the plants. Then I just put a small hole in it and put my plant in. It’s much easier than trying to mulch around all the little plants. (Note from Mike: Don’t use plastic for weed control. If you do, the plants won’t get enough water.)

    When To Plant

Two to Four weeks before last frost is when you can plant cool weather crops like spinach, onions, radishes and lettuce. After the last frost in your area is the best time to plant warm weather plants like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. You can find out when your last expected frost date is here.

You can set some of your plants out a week or two early if you put mini greenhouses on them, like an empty milk carton with the bottom cut off. Take the lid off during the day and put it back on at night to keep the heat in. Be careful– If you get a hot day, you can fry your plants so take off the mini greenhouses if you get a really warm day.

Transplant your plants in early evening so they have time to get over the shock before the hot sun the next day.

    Watering Your Garden

One important thing when you start a garden is to be prepared to water it. Do it. Really! Some people (like mom) think that you can just put your plants out and that’s it. You have to water your plants and you have to water them correctly. If your plants start to wilt, that means you need to water. If you notice that your tomatoes aren’t wilting but your cucumbers are, then you could have bugs instead but, for the most part, if you see your plants wilting they need water.

A good indicator plant is tomatoes. Tomatoes need a lot of water. If you start to see them wilting, you will know that the garden needs some water.

Don’t over-water either. If you do, you will rot your plants. If you aren’t sure if you need to water, stick your finger in the soil next to the plants. If it is moist or feels cold then you probably don’t need to water.

Just a side note: One time, Mom planted a cherry tomato right under the faucet. She had cherry tomatoes coming out of everywhere! One year I might try this just to see what happens! :-)

    Weeding (Weed killers, etc.)

If you put down a layer of newspaper or landscape fabric, you won’t need to weed as much. Mulch is the best way to keep weeds at bay because weed seeds need light to germinate and if they don’t have it you won’t have as many weeds.

how to mulch garden paths for weed control

I like to use wood chips for mulch. I can usually find them free from tree cutting companies or from the city or county. Cities and counties usually have a branch disposal center and will mulch them. Usually, you can take your truck or car and go load some up. When we didn’t have a truck we would load the wood chips in the back of our car in galvanized containers. When we didn’t have those we put a big tarp in the trunk and loaded it. We pulled the tarp up the sides so the wood chips wouldn’t end up all over the place.

You can also buy mulch at the store. Look for broken and torn open bags. A lot of times, the store will have those discounted for .50 or $1.00 a bag just to get rid of them. If some bags are torn open but not marked down, ask if you can get them for less. Often, they just haven’t gotten to marking them down yet.

If you call a tree cutting service to see if they have wood chips, be sure to ask if they are free. One time I just asked for wood chips. I was ecstatic when I got the most beautiful wood chips I’d ever seen and the company even delivered them! I cried a week later when I got a bill for $100. Augh!! Huge frugal flop!

    Pests (natural and other pesticides)

I use regular good old pesticides on my gardens. Why? Because it kills the bugs. Pesticides wash off of your produce and, if mixed correctly, don’t harm the environment. A lot of times you will need to spray before the fruit or vegetable has set so you don’t even spray the actual produce, just the plant.

If you want to go organic, one of the best things to use is just plain dish soap. Mix with some water and spray it on your plants and it will kill a lot of the pests. Here are some other organic pesticides to use but be careful!! If you are using organic pesticides to save the environment you may actually be doing more harm than good.

how to start a garden - staking and tomato cages

    Staking

Some plants will need to be staked or grown on a trellis. A fence is a good place to start. If you don’t have a fence, you can start by scouring yard sales for things like tomato cages. I find them all the time for less than a dollar and they last forever. You can also take small pieces of wire fence, make a circle and make your own a cage. Another idea is to just use a stick or rod. Put it in the ground next to your plant and then just tie with string, old panty hose, etc.

These are a few of the basics to help you get started. Feel free to ask questions about how to start a garden or anything about gardening and I will answer them as best as I can. If you need help with specific tips about how to start a garden for your specific area you can also call your local Cooperative Extension Service. You can find the extension office for your state here or look in the phone book under County Extension.

Our new house was driving me crazy because the builders did not make a useful enough pantry. Here's how I made a much better pantry for just $10!

    Inexpensive $10 Pantry Makeover

We moved into this house in May 2011. This was my pantry and for 6 months it’s been driving me crazy! I just had to organize my pantry!

As you can see it was a mess. We couldn’t find anything and everyone just kept digging through stuff trying to find what they needed and then made a bigger mess.

    The original pantry

I had been going crazy trying to figure out how to organize my kitchen. This is a brand new house but it was designed by men who have never used a kitchen. After spending 6 months trying to figure out some way to organize my kitchen and get all my stuff in there instead of sitting in the garage, mom came up with the idea for me to put my pantry in the coat closet by the garage door instead of where it was “supposed” to be.

I have a hall tree and another closet by the front door that we use for coats instead. (We still can’t park in the garage… yet. :-) (Note from Mike: Oh, the horror, the horror!)

So I started to paint. Here is what it looked like before. There was one shelf about 2/3 of the way up that I had already taken down. Of course I had “help” painting. I used about $5 worth of paint. The original peach I chose was too dark, almost neon, so I mixed it half and half with white I already had and then it was perfect.

    Jack in the new pantry

Then I got busy making shelves. Since we are in a new construction area, we’ve been doing a lot of dumpster diving for 2×4’s, plywood, sod, shelving, windows and all kinds of stuff. (Yes, I asked permission.) So I took some of the plywood and 1×2’s that we found and cut them up to make shelves. Then I painted them.

I painted the 1×2’s the same peach as the walls and painted the shelves white.

Then I started putting in the shelves. Since I’m sick, the whole process took me about a week to do. :-)

Here is what it looked like after I got the shelves in and loaded.

    Pantry

This is also when Jack decided to make the old pantry his new “house’.

    Jack's New House

You might notice that the shelves with the canned goods are sagging so I had to take some of them out, get thicker pieces of board, cut and paint and re-install them so they wouldn’t collapse. If you are making shelves for canned goods MAKE SURE THEY ARE 3/4 INCH at least!

Then I decided to decorate. I had some readers ask, “Why would you decorate a pantry?” Well, I look at it many times a day every day so I thought, “Why not make it look good”!

So I went for it and I LOVE it!! Now I wish I could pull up a chair and just sit and admire my pantry. :-)

    Pantry With Door Open

First I put in all my crates. I have collected and hauled these crates around for 17 years and 14 moves but never have found a really good use them. Now I love what I did with them.

    Pantry Lace

Then I added some metal seed packet signs on the side with an old trowel from my great grandmother.

    Seed Packets and Trowel

Then I made a door hanging. Mom found the base at the thrift store for me and gave it to me for Christmas one year. I just love it but never could find a good place to hang it. Now I can see it every day and just love it!!

It took me about an hour to get it done and what a mess! Of course, Jack kept helping!

    Big Mess Making Door Hanger

Now that it’s done, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!

    Door Hanger

Then I added eyelet lace. I have always loved the look of the shelves from the 20’s where they put the paper lace on the edges of the shelves. You can’t really find it anywhere now so I just used some eyelet. I had 2 yards already so I did have to buy 4 yards ($5). Then I just hot glued it to the edge to cover up the ugly plywood. Even painted, the plywood looked bad. Doesn’t the lace just make it look like a farmhouse pantry!

Close Up Showing Lace and Gnome

Then because I am a “lover of all gnomes”, I just had to put in some my almost 50 gnomes. I hot glued them to the shelves so they wouldn’t fall down.

I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my new pantry! After working 2 weeks total to get it done, I’m ready to sit back and admire it! Tawra

Homemade Clorox Disinfecting Wipes – A Budget-Friendly Alternative!

If you love Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you’ll love these Homemade Clorox Wipes! They’re an easy, inexpensive alternative that disinfects just as well—without the high price tag.

Clorox wipes have always been popular for easy disinfecting, but they can be expensive and it’s not always easy to find them in the store. Our homemade Clorox wipes recipe is easy to make with common ingredients and they’re easy to wash and reuse.

I have seen recipes for Homemade Cleaning Wipes all over the Internet. The one problem I have with most of them is that they use vinegar and tea tree oil. Well, vinegar and tea tree oil do not disinfect properly like you should in a bathroom. I know people swear that these ingredients disinfect and they do disinfect to a certain degree but to say vinegar totally disinfects as well as bleach is not true at all. (Just call your local health department if you don’t believe me.)

If you love Clorox disinfecting wipes, this Homemade Clorox Wipes recipe makes a handy, inexpensive alternative to quickly disinfect that works just as well and costs a lot less.

    Homemade Clorox Disinfecting Wipes

My Clorox wipes recipe calls for using rubbing alcohol. Not only does it truly disinfect but rubbing alcohol shines your faucets so they look great!!

The Dawn cuts grease which is another thing the vinegar does not do. (Ever noticed how oil and vinegar in salad dressing don’t mix? Same idea!) So this recipe will really cut through that slime.

This is just one of 1,200+ recipes and tips in our cookbook! Get your copy here and start saving money today!

You can put these pre-moistened disinfecting wipes in a baby wipe or plastic container. Then they will be handy and ready to go whenever you need them. You can also make this mixture and just put it in a spray bottle. Then simply spray it on and wipe it with rags or paper towels.

    Homemade Clorox Wipes Recipe

    Ingredients

    1 cup water
    1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1 tsp. Dawn dish soap (only use Dawn)
    2 Tbsp. ammonia (optional)
24 rags – cut into squares. (I cut them to about 4×6 inches but whatever size you have available or whichever size you need will work. I also use old washrags that have seen better days.)

    Instructions

Mix the ingredients and pour over the rags.* Then, when you need to clean your bathroom, use them as you would the disposable Clorox wipes.

The best thing about these homemade wipes is that you can just throw them in the washing machine and use them again! Really! It’s that simple!

*After you make this homemade Clorox wipes recipe, you will need to adjust how much of the mixture you pour over your rags. I didn’t have that many rags and they were pretty wet so I just used less of the cleaner.
