Homemade Hush Puppies Recipe

This easy homemade hush puppies recipe makes tasty golden hush puppies just like your favorite restaurant! Crisp and buttery on the outside and delicious and moist and tender on the inside, they are the perfect complement to all kinds of meals!

Ingredients

Units

1 1/2 cups cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg, well beaten
3/4 cup milk
1 small onion, grated or 1 tsp. onion powder
dash of Tabasco (optional)
vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix together cornmeal, flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
  2. Mix egg, milk, onion and Tabasco in another bowl.
  3. Combine with dry ingredients.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil for frying.
  5. Drop a teaspoonful of the mixture at a time into the hot oil.
  6. When the hush puppies are crisp and golden (about 1 minute), remove from the hot oil and drain on a paper towel. Serve hot. Serves 4-6.

Notes

Hush puppies are often served with malt vinegar.
