Ingredients

1 pkg. or 1 Tbsp. yeast
1 Tbsp. sugar or honey
1 cup warm water (110-115°)
2 Tbsp. olive or vegetable oil
1 tsp. salt
33 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbsp. milk

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water.
  2. Add oil and salt and enough flour to make a stiff dough.
  3. Knead 10 minutes on a floured board.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, turning once.
  5. Let rise until doubled, about 1 1/2 – 2 hours.
  6. Punch down and let rest for 15 minutes.
  7. Divide the dough in half. Roll each half on a floured surface into a 15-inch long log.
  8. Grease 2 cookie sheets and sprinkle with cornmeal.
  9. Place the dough on the greased cookie sheets
  10. Make 5 slashes diagonally across the tops.
  11. Mix egg and milk and brush on top.
  12. Let rise until double, about 1 hour.
  13. Preheat oven to 375°.
  14. Bake for 25 minutes or until loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
