This hearty Italian French Dip sandwich recipe makes delicious sandwiches loaded with savory Italian sausage, melty cheese, and sautéed onions—grilled to golden perfection and served with a zesty pizza-style tomato dipping sauce. A fun twist on the classic French Dip!

Ingredients

Dipping Sauce:

1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
1/4 tsp. dried basil
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes, crushed
1/8 tsp. garlic powder

Sandwiches

1 lb bulk (ground) Italian or country sausage
1 med. onion, thinly sliced and separated
8 slices mozzarella cheese (or a similar amount of Parmesan)
8 pieces of French bread, sliced
Butter or margarine (for grilling)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients.
  2. Simmer over low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Shape the sausage into 4 patties and fry until cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, sauté the onions in the sausage drippings.
  5. Place a slice of cheese on each of 4 pieces of bread
  6. Top each with a sausage patty, sautéed onions, and another slice of cheese.
  7. Finish with the remaining bread slices to make 4 sandwiches.
  8. Lightly butter the outsides of the sandwiches and grill in a skillet or sandwich press until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  9. Slice and serve with the warm dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Save money by making smaller patties, using less meat, ot using just one slice of cheese per sandwich. Still delicious—just lighter on the wallet!
