This best scalloped potatoes recipe is loaded with tender sliced potatoes baked in a rich, creamy sauce that’s pure comfort food. It’s easy to make with ingredients you probably already have and requires almost no prep. Buttery, savory, and incredibly satisfying, it’s the kind of classic homemade dish that makes everyone want to go back for seconds!

Ingredients

6 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/2 cup dry milk (optional)
1 tsp. onion powder (optional)
salt and pepper (to taste)
3 cups cold milk
4 cups potatoes, sliced
1 onion, sliced
1-1 1/2 cups diced ham, bacon, or sausage (optional)
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. In a quart jar or bowl, combine the flour, dry milk, onion powder (if using), salt, and pepper. Close jar and shake or whisk well to mix.
  3. Add the cold milk, then shake or whisk again until the flour mixture is completely dissolved.
  4. Grease a 3-quart casserole dish.
  5. Layer half of the potatoes, onions, and meat (if using) in the dish. Dot with small pieces of butter.

  6. Add the remaining potatoes, onions, and meat, and dot again with butter.

  7. Pour the flour/milk mixture evenly over the top.

  8. Bake 1 ½ hours. If the top starts to get too brown in the last 30 minutes, cover for the remaining bake time.

Notes

Variation: Au Gratin Potatoes

For a cheesy version, add 1½ cups shredded or cubed cheese between the layers or sprinkle it over the top before baking.
