Ingredients

1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. ginger
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Pour boiling water over shortening.
  3. Add sugar, molasses and egg.
  4. Mix the remaining ingredients together.
  5. Add to the liquids.
  6. Beat with an electric mixer.
  7. Pour into a greased 8×8 inch pan.
  8. Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Notes

If you want to Freeze the Gingerbread Dough for later:

After mixing the gingerbread dough and placing it in the pan, freeze it. Then when you’re ready to use it, place it in a cold oven. Bake at 350° for about 45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
