(This recipe is called Applesauce Candy in our Dining On A Dime Cookbook, volume 1.)

Ingredients

1 cup applesauce*
1 cup sugar
1 sm. pkg. fruit gelatin (3 oz.)
extra sugar for coating

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease an 8×8-inch pan or line it with wax paper for easier removal.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the applesauce and sugar.
  3. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from the heat and stir in the gelatin until completely dissolved.
  5. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Let stand at room temperature for 24 hours, or until firm.
  7. Cut into 1-inch squares and roll each piece in sugar.
  8. Let the candies sit for another 24 hours, then roll them in sugar a second time for an extra-sparkly coating.
  9. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

*Puree fruit cocktail, peaches or pears if you like instead of applesauce.
