Ingredients

2 (20-oz.) cans apple pie filling
1/4 tsp. allspice (optional)
1/4 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
1/2 bag caramel bits (about 5-6 oz.)
1 box spice cake mix
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) salted butter, cut into 15 thin slices
Whipped cream, frosting, or vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Dump both cans of apple pie filling into the prepared dish.
  3. Sprinkle with allspice and cinnamon, then stir gently and smooth with a spatula.
  4. Sprinkle the caramel bits evenly over the apples.
  5. Pour the dry cake mix on top, spreading it into an even layer. Do not stir.
  6. Arrange the butter slices evenly over the cake mix, covering as much of the surface as possible.
  7. Bake uncovered for 40–50 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through, until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Top with whipped cream, frosting, or vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

For extra crunch, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the cake mix before adding the butter.
