I love your website! It is so insightful and helpful

I need advise on this issue. I’ve not put anything on my credit cards in close to a year now, but I’m only able to pay the miniumum. Being out of work, I am happy not to be adding to it, but I see no end in sight.

    • Kathy first don’t get discouraged. I always say we spend years charging up a credit card so it won’t go away in a few months – now I didn’t say that to discourage you but to let you know it will take some patience and time.

The other thing is you have to pay some extra besides the minimum amount. That is part of where people get trapped. You really aren’t paying on the amount you borrowed when you pay minimum amount but on the interest and other fees so the amount never goes down.

What might help you to see better results is to pick your lowest amount card and pay as much extra as you can on it (still paying minimum on the other cards) and work at getting it paid off. When you get that paid off then take every penny of it and put towards your next one.

Some people say to pick the card with the highest interest on it which is good advice but if it is a large amount, human nature being what it is can easily get discouraged if you can’t see results which is normal. That is why I more often then not recommend picking to lowest amount owed instead when someone is discouraged. Other wise we tend to just want to quit and give up which is worse.

If you say I can’t find one penny extra to put towards it, really look at things. I am I die hard on this. If I had to go with out lunch 3 days a week and only have a small snack to add that money to pay my card I would do it. Save your change, walk a few places to save gas… see what I mean about being die hard about it. Usually there is some place a person can find an extra $10 – $20 a month or more to add to a bill. Check out the web site we have tips all over on how to save on everything. Hope this helps some.

My goal for 2012 is not to use my credit cards for anything. One of the cards is moving slowly downward with no charges. The other is used for the medical bills after the flexible spending dollars run out (so soon – in August due to unexpected health issues). Would love new ideas in how to pay these off faster.

    • Maggie I don’t know how many new ideas I have because I’m afraid the bottom line is the more you can pay towards a card the faster it will get down. Oh. also as I mentioned earlier I was very much a die hard and getting out from under my debt was my biggest goal because I hated the burden of them so I was dogmatic about getting it done which meant I used every spare penny (some I couldn’t really spare) to pay it off. I’m saying this because each person can choose or has to decide what level of “suffering and sacrifice” they are willing to do. That doesn’t mean any one person is better or greater if they decide not to go the hardest route. It’s just what you can deal with.

That being said here are the basics.

Number one is to stop using your cards at all unless you are going to pay them off at the end of the month.

You have to pay more then minimum amount. As I mentioned earlier depending on your state of mind you can either choose your lowest card and take all your extra to pay it off or your can take the one with the lowest interest. If you are in a hurry to see results the first choice is best. Then when you get the first card paid take all the money you had been paying on it and start using it on to your next card. This is when you will really start seeing some results. It usually gets people excited enough that they start finding extra money to add even more to their cards. Still though pay minimum on your other cards.

Start saving change or each time you do without a coffee or pop or something similar add a $1 to a jar and at the end of the month add it too your bill. If you are really serious find one new way to save on gas, groceries etc. and take that extra and add it to your bill. Check out the web site we have so many ideas on how to do this in all areas.

Take all bonus’s, tax refunds or any extra and put towards the bills.
