Scented Cinnamon Ornaments

If you have gone to the trouble to make someone homemade gifts, go the extra mile and make the presentation and packaging special too. It can make the difference between an "oh, thank you" gift and a "how cute is this, I love it, it’s adorable!" gift.

If you are giving cocoa mix in a mug, tie peppermint sticks or candy canes onto the mug to use for stirring. Even one or two spoons dipped in white chocolate can make the difference between a "ho-hum" gift and a "wow!" gift.

Copy the packaging and presentation ideas you see in magazines or on TV. There is a reason they can sell $.50 worth of cocoa for $25.

Instead of just giving someone a plate of brownies, cut them into Christmas shapes with your cookie cutters. Things like stars, trees or bells work well. Go a step further and covering them with frosting or sprinkles.

Steam vegetables or fruits in a small amount of water. You can start with peas, green beans, apples, peaches, pears or sweet potatoes.

For meats: boil in some water until tender. Chicken is a good meat to start with.

Cool. Puree with water or breast milk in a blender or food processor until smooth. I just use a hand blender and I have baby food in about 30 seconds. Just rinse off the blender and you’re done!

Freeze the baby food puree in ice cube trays.

When frozen, place your homemade baby food cubes in a freezer bag. Take as many cubes as you need for a meal. Simply defrost and serve.

The Fast and Easy Homemade Baby Food Method

When I’m in a hurry, I just open a can of vegetables or fruit and puree it right in the can with my hand blender. It’s quick and easy. I drain off some of the juice but not all of it.

Of course, you can always just open a jar of applesauce and give it to them.

If you are on the go: You can store homemade baby food in small half cup containers that are easy to grab and run.

Using Food From You Dinner

You can always use leftovers from your dinner to make baby food, too. Just puree and freeze it as above.

If the leftovers have seasonings on them, I just rinse them off before pureeing. Tawra

S’mores Tips

S’mores are amazing things. They can be eaten all year round as snacks or desserts and lots of people, young and old alike, love them. These tips are especially good to keep on hand when the kids want some s’mores and you don’t have a piece of chocolate in the house.

Here are some modern day twists on an old time favorite snack.

Use chocolate chips or leftover Easter bunnies in place of the candy bar.

Forget the chocolate altogether. Spread a graham cracker with strawberry or raspberry jam, add a roasted marshmallow and a slice or two of strawberry (or even a slice of banana).

With snow in most of the country I thought I would post these recipes and tips for a fun frugal snow day. I put some pictures of our place too! Enjoy!

Snow Ice Cream

You can see the snow ice cream video here.

Snow Ice Cream

1/2 cup milk or cream
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
2 cereal bowls fresh clean snow.

Mix milk, sugar and vanilla together. Stir until vanilla is dissolved. Add fresh snow and stir gently until it is thoroughly mixed. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Snow Cones

Crushed Ice or Snow
1 pkg. flavored drink mix (flavor of your choice)

Mix drink mix with half as much water as the directions indicate. Chill 1 hour. Just before serving, crush some ice or pack snow into your cup. You can use either a snow cone maker or put some ice cubes in a plastic bag and pound with hammer. Pack ice chips into cups, pour chilled drink mix over the ice and serve. You can also use fruit juice boiled down to half with food coloring added:

Apple juice: green or red food coloring

Grape juice: purple food coloring
