I have been trying to practice what I preach, so I recently started clearing out piles of paperwork. As I was doing it I ran across this cute “Cathy” cartoon which I had to laugh at and I thought you moms would get a kick out of it. It goes like this:

It shows Cathy talking to her best friend and saying, “Just let me see if I have this straight, Andrea. If I become a housewife and cook meals, I’ll be a subservient slave… but if I were a chef in a restaurant, I’d bring dignity to all of womanhood.

If I spend my days cleaning bathtubs and toilets, my status as a female is equal to a groveling worm… but if I go to work for the sewer company, I’ll make headlines as a feminist star.

What’s the difference, Andrea?!?! What makes the same measly job an insult if you do it at home, but an honor if you make a career?!!?

Andrea answers, “MONEY!“

I just thought this was kind of funny. Oh and for those of you in the younger generation, a housewife is what they used to call a stay at home mom.

How to Learn Homemaking Skills

Definition of Skill:

the ability, coming from one’s knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc. to do something well.

competent excellence in performance; expertness; dexterity

understanding, discernment.

the ability to use one’s knowledge effectively and readilyin execution or performance.

to make a difference

Many of you who have been following our site may start to get overwhelmed at this point. It happens to almost everyone when they are trying to improve themselves in any area. At times when reading a self improvement book, taking a course, or hearing a speaker I become excited and inspired. Then I run the whole gamut, which looks something like this:

First and second day jump up and put it into practice

Third day run into an obstacle

Fourth day decide it is way too hard

Fifth day give up.

Has anyone else been there and done that? Now that I am beginning to get ancient (to quote my children– I have news for them!), I have finally figured something out.

Everything is difficult and awkward when you first try it.

Everything has obstacles that need to be overcome in order to succeed (That’s the secret to success: overcoming obstacles).

You will obtain more knowledge, skill and strength if you don’t give up.

You learn to enjoy the things you do more. There is a certain joy that comes in doing things when you know how to do them well. It actually gives you pleasure. Look at your own life. Don’t the things you do really well give you the most pleasure? Tawra gardens and she is really good at it. Guess what she enjoys doing the most – gardening. You will be surprised how many things you once hated doing that you will enjoy when you start doing them well.

You gain confidence. With each new skill you develop, your confidence starts soaring. That is why it is so important to teach children useful skills. The more they know and are good at accomplishing, the more confidence they gain. You won’t have to read them a book on how to be confident or remind them hourly that they are special and spend hours being their cheerleader. Encouraging your kids with words is fine but there is a flip side to that too.

I wrote the definition of skills down so you could make note of a few key words:

Practice - That means to train at something by repeated exercises or to form a correct habit by repetition. In other words you need to do something over and over to get good at doing it.

I always say if you want to learn to bake a pie make one every day for 14 days and at the end of that time you will know how to bake a pie. Why? Because you will have made every mistake there is in making a pie and hopefully you will have learned not to do the same thing wrong the next time. You need to do this with anything you want to learn.

There is an order to things. If you keep practicing you will become competent. You can’t become competent until you have practiced. You then gain an understanding and discernment about what you are doing so that you can effectively and readily (quickly) perform the job at hand. That is how you learn a skill. Not by sitting and hoping someone will wave a magic wand over you or deciding, “That just isn’t my thing.”

People always want me to tell them how to quickly clean their kitchens or bathrooms and give them a magic formula. I can give steps, which will help, but you will only start performing them quickly and competently after you have practiced them for a bit.

It’s just like with any job. The first week I start, I want to quit. Nothing makes sense. I am always all thumbs and constantly one step behind everyone else. But because I have incentive (I need the money), I keep at it. By week two I’m feeling more comfortable. At the end of the month I think I have figured it out. In two months I consider myself an expert and very knowledgeable in what I have to do and I do it quickly and efficiently.

I like definition #5: to make a difference. Will you have made a difference by persevering; a difference for you and your family and their lives? So many of us look at the world and think, “Oh I wish I could make a difference for those people in a far off country or change the environment,” but we don’t often have the wherewithal to make a difference in our own home and family. How could we expect to do anything on a greater scale?

The secret is to do what is right even if it is hard. You can’t gain skills in anything by taking the easy way out. You need to follow the definition: practice to become competent. You will then gain understanding and discernment so you can effectively and readily do the job and make a difference in yourself, your home and the world.

So I found this brilliant idea on Pinterest to keep track of taking your antibiotics. Since I have to be on antibiotics for 2-6 months I think this will help me keep track of when I take them. Even though mine will be pill bottles I can just tape a paper to the side and make a chart. This will so help my “always confused from brain fog” mind remember if I took my pills!

Tawra

P.S. I realized that I posted on Facebook about the antibiotics but not on here so here’s the run down for those of you who are wondering why in the world I’m taking so many antibiotics.

I have been so sick I can hardly get off the couch for the last several years. I kept going to the doctor trying to figure out what was wrong.

I finally went to a $2,000 cash only doc (M.D) who specializes in functional medicine. After about 15 tubes of blood were taken that thankfully my insurance paid for or it would have been another $1,0000 here’s what he found out. I have:

Gluten allergy
Major insulin problems (no sugar or substitutes)
2 major bacterial infections ( 2-6 months of 3 different antibiotics)
Major yeast overgrowth (2-6 months of yeast meds.)
Low Vit. D and C
Low iron

Other than that I’m doing good! LOL No wonder I can’t get off the couch and feel mostly dead instead of semi-alive most days!

I have to go on this horrible diet (GAPS) for 1- 2 years but after that he said I should start feeling better…if I live through it!! hehehe

Have you ever had one of those Duhhhh!!! moments when you ask yourself, “Why didn’t I think of that sooner?” I have several articles all over the website about cleaning and organizing but I thought I would take a moment to give you a few more tips that will make your cleaning and organizing easier, faster and more pleasant for you.

Do a big messy job first thing in the day.

If you do one larger or more important job right away, it won’t matter as much if the rest of the day is full of interruption. You will have gotten your one thing done and feel good about it.

Spray your cleaning products on your rag.

It saves you money and time. When dusting, spray your Pledge on your rag, not on the table you are dusting.

When I did professional cleaning, I was repeatedly instructed when cleaning a bathroom to spray the cleaning products on my rags*. This way, I didn’t waste time rinsing and re-rinsing the sink or tub.

Fast forward 15 years and someone has invented a new product everyone is crazy about – bathroom wipes. People love them because the can just wipe and run. This is the same thing professional cleaners had been doing for years.

*The only exception to spraying the rag would be if you have bad build up. Then you need to spray the product on the sink or tub and let it soak. If you clean regularly, build up generally shouldn’t be a problem.

//-->

Sort your mail.

Find time during the day to sort your mail. I usually sort mine the minute I get it out of the mailbox. If that doesn’t work for you, at least sort it before you go to bed.

When I sort mail, I make 3 piles:

Junk mail/trash

Bills or things I need to answer.

Things to file.

I then toss the trash, place bills in an area where I can deal with them and put the third pile by my file box so I can file it.

This takes me 2 minutes because I don’t thoroughly read things. I’m just sorting and will deal with them later.

Little things make a difference.

Sometimes the smallest changes can make a big difference. For example, you are allowed to change the shelves in your kitchen cabinets to fit your needs. If you are storing things in one place and it isn’t working then try someplace else.

Help yourself get motivated.

My mom leaves her stove light on in the evening, which gives the kitchen a warm feeling. It also provides just enough light so you can see when you are popping in to get an evening snack. I decided to do something similar so I put a small lamp on the kitchen counter for a soft glow.

That counter had always been cluttered but now I am forced to keep it clean because the lamp would show the mess. It is the same type of motivation as having company over to force yourself to clean the house.

Even something as simple as putting a pretty flower arrangement on a dining room table can help you want to keep it clutter free.

Time yourself.

Stop putting off doing things because you think it will take you too long. If your house is an average uncluttered house in reasonable condition, it really doesn’t take that long to do most cleaning and organizing tasks.

15 minutes or less to dust

15 minutes or less to clean a bathroom

15-20 minutes to vacuum

Do It Now.

Do those things that only take 30 seconds to one minute to do right now:

Hang up your car keys. Don’t carry them across the room and lay them on the table.

Hang up you coat. Don’t dump it on a chair or on the floor.

Toss your clothes in the hamper. Don’t leave them on the floor.

Stop trying to stuff more garbage into the trash can. Grab it and take it out right now! It will take less time to simply take out the trash than it does to keep stuffing.

There are lots of little things that are easy to do in less than a minute. Today, when I was microwaving my cocoa for 1 minute, I noticed that the back of my stove was covered in flour and grime. My first thought was, “I need to give that a good wiping sometime soon.” Duh!! What was I thinking? I quickly grabbed the cleaner and a rag, sprayed it, wiped the stove and polished it with the towel– all before my cocoa was done.

If you don’t have a large laundry room, sort your clothes at the hampers in the bedrooms or bathrooms.

Looking at piles of laundry laying in front of a washer can be discouraging and mentally wearing, not to mention the acrobatics you have to go through climbing over the pile as you are loading the washer. I have rarely felt overwhelmed by my laundry because I didn’t have piles of it laying everywhere.

The method that has worked the best for me is to have a hamper for each bedroom.

Each day, I would sort my clothes into 3 piles right there by my hamper.

If I had mostly dark items, the other piles would go back into the hamper and I would carry the darks to the next room.

I would sort again, pick up the darks and return the rest to the hamper.

After hitting all the bedrooms, I would put the darks in the washer and start my first load. Usually one huge armful was one load so this wasn’t hard.

This sounds more complicated than it is.

The next day, when I needed to wash another load, most of the whites and lights were pretty much together. I had already sorted them earlier so I didn’t really have much sorting to do. All that needed to be sorted was the handful of clothes that had been added the night before. It would take me about 2 minutes each day to do this because everything was “pre-sorted”.

I have modified this method this for my circumstances.

For example, Tawra keeps a hamper in the laundry room by her washer. Sometimes, when I would help her with the laundry, the kids would bring me their dirty laundry. I quickly sorted my 3 piles, placed one in the washer and put the other two back in her hamper by the washer. When the first load was finished, I would grab the next load from the hamper and toss it in.

If you keep up on your laundry, it will be easy to keep in one big hamper. Doing laundry like this for 7 people was no problem.

Sewing Tips

I just finished an article for a future newsletter on the website and as usual I had more tips than I had room. Here are a few “leftover” odds and end tips I thought some of you could use.

Use knitting needle guards or a small cork to protect the end of small scissors, especially when you are traveling with them.

Use a mesh bag (like potatoes or fruits come in) to put your yarn in when knitting. This is especially good when using more than one color because you can pull each color through a different hole in the bag.

If you are hand appliquéing and use beeswax to keep your thread from tangling, run the thread over the beeswax then press it with your iron. This embeds the wax into the thread so it all doesn’t come off with the first stitch. This really isn’t that hard. It doesn’t take as much time as you would think and it works so well. It doesn’t hurt your iron, but it does help the iron glide more smoothly.

When appliquéing, if you don’t have an appliqué sheetfor pressing several pieces together save the sheets you peel your computer labels from. Press your applique pieces to the shiny side.

If you use a guard glove with your rotary cutter, store your cutter inside the glove. That way you will always know where it is. I also keep my cutter in an old fabric eye glass holder.

I didn’t know for a long time when using a sewing “ham”the wool side is for pressing wool and silk and the duck side is for pressing cotton and linen. A sewing ham is an odd ham shaped thing which is used to press curved and usual angles especially in sewing clothes.

One thing I learned years after I had been sewing was that there is a right and wrong side to a needle. If you have trouble threading a needle, turn the eye around and try the other side. It’s amazing how well this works.

Holding a needle against a white background makes it easier to see and thread.

Instead of licking your thread, lick the needle itself and be sure to bring the needle to the thread not poke the thread into the needle. Try these things to see if it helps in threading your needle next time.

Use embroidery bobbins(those square white cards you wind embroidery thread on) to wrap regular thread on to carry for you projects. They are flat and take up very little space. I have used sewing machine bobbins for my portable sewing but I like these are even better.

These are a few ideas for now. I know many of your have some great ones, too. I do believe quilters, crafters and sewers have some of the coolest ideas. It always amazes the things they can come up with. : )

You have seen them everywhere– bags of those ugly old silk flowers and garlands. I even have a few in my garage. Well, believe it or not there is a use, even for those.

I have spray painted things like faded silk geraniums red and tucked them into my flower boxes with my real flowers and people can’t tell they aren’t real.

Try different colors. For example, if you like the shabby chic look then spray paint all of the silk flowers white and tuck them in different places.

Silver or gold will look great with many different styles of decorating.

Spray paint your old silk flowers black and use them to decorate for Halloween. The more worn the better.

Don’t forget you can paint those ugly old vases, too. They work especially well for things like Halloween decorations.

I just found a bunch of glass pop bottles. Instead of tossing them, I am going to spray paint them all white and line them along my kitchen window sill with a colorful flower in each one.

You can buy special silk flower paint, but I just use regular spray paint. I don’t stress about it if they don’t turn out or if the paint starts to peel after a bit. I was going to toss this stuff anyway, so I don’t have anything to loss and I might have a lot to gain.

Here’s an excerpt about decluttering kids’ rooms from one of our Saving with Kids e-books.

De-cluttering Kids Rooms

I just did this for the boys yesterday. It’s funny– kids really do love a clean room!

BJ (13) asked David (7) “Would you please ask mom to help you clean up your stuff!” Not even two seconds later, David came out and said, “Mom can you please help me clean up my room”. After it was cleaned up, they both said “Thank you so much mom!”

Kids love neat and clean areas just as much we do. I know kids need to keep their own stuff picked up but there are times when the cavalry does need to come in and save the day. We’ll be running more posts on this subject over the next few days. Enjoy! Tawra

De-cluttering Toys

Make piles and label boxes according to these categories:

Trash (I bring in the kitchen trash can and just throw it straight in there.)

Sort and put away in room

Yard sale/Give away

Put in another room

Pack and store

Decide

BE RUTHLESS!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to be ruthless in getting rid of your children’s excess toys. As parents, we know we are supposed to protect our children physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Often we worry so much about others harming our children in these areas but, more often than not, we are the ones who do the greatest harm to them. One of the ways that we forget to protect our children emotionally is by allowing them to have so many toys and things that they become overwhelmed and frustrated.

I know this may seem like something trivial compared to what is going on in the world, but you have to realize your child’s room and toys are his world. Children really aren’t interested in anything else but their own spheres, and if that little world of theirs is piled with mounds of toys and other things, it can be overwhelming for them to deal with on a daily basis.

I can’t handle it if I have too many things to choose from, and I’m an adult. What did you feel like the last time you went to buy something new like shampoo or make-up? Were you overwhelmed with so many different kinds to choose from? There’s nothing wrong with any of them. It’s just that there are so many kinds. Put yourself in your child’s place. A child isn’t as emotionally mature as you are. Imagine how he feels.

I just watched an organizing show where the parents (at the advice of the organizer) spent several hundred dollars on shelving and storage containers to store the children’s toys. One container alone held 75 small cars. No child needs 75 or more of any type of toy at all. Do you know how much money could have been saved on shelving and containers if they had just gotten rid of more of those toys? Think of the headaches you have just trying to keep all those toys under control.

Don’t feel guilty or think you are depriving your children when you reduce excess toys. You are doing them a favor, and besides they probably won’t miss them. Have you noticed how children usually play with the same handful of toys over and over? In the same way, we keep 25 different colors of eye shadow, but only use 3-4 favorites over and over. If the rest of them were dumped, we wouldn’t even miss them, and our kids won’t miss the extra toys, either

Of course, this doesn’t mean to be cruel and get rid of their favorite bears or dolls, but I’m talking about all those things buried at the bottom of their toy boxes and closets that haven’t seen the light of day for years.

       -Jill

PS Since I wrote this I saw a show where these 2 boys had mounds and mounds of toys. For fun they would throw their toys out their bedroom window to watch them break and shatter. The parents didn’t have a clue so they had someone come in to help and the first thing they did was take away all the toys but 10. The interesting thing was the boys took care of the toys better, put them up without a fuss and actually played with the toys. These facts might help some of you parents be more ruthless.

Folding Fabric

I have struggled for years to figure out a way to keep the fabric on my shelves looking neat. I had big pieces and little pieces and they all looked messy no matter how careful I was. After 30 plus years I discovered something that changed my life. I was so excited that when I got it done I was bringing the neighbors in to see it.

Even better, I couldn’t believe how easy and fast it was to do it. Previously, I had 2 shelving units that had been packed and stuffed with material. Now, after about 2 hours, the material was folded and placed where I could not only see it to use it but where I could get to it easily without mounds of fabric falling on me.

Dee, you can use this same folding technique with your bolts too and then lay them flat on the shelves you have. Also, if you have a closet you can fold and hang a lot on a sturdy hanger. Then you can hang it on a rod in the closet.

You could make your own cardboard centers. Get some scrap heavy cardboard. (Grocery stores and various other places have a ton. I am forever going in and seeing someone stocking and asking if I can have some of their boxes. They are always tickled to get rid of them.) Then cut the heavy cardboard scraps with a knife to the size that you need. If it helps, the ones that fabric bolts come on are about the same size as a 24×6 plastic ruler.

You don’t need to use that size for your fabric bolts if you don’t want to. If another size might fit better and you could use the shelf space better, then try another size.

Here is a video showing an interesting board they sell. I wouldn’t buy them myself but it gives the measurements on the video so I will probably make something like it out of cardboard. Keep your eyes peeled. After seeing this video, it reminded me of a stack of plastic shoe box lids I once saw at a garage sale for almost nothing and they or something similar would be perfect for this type of thing.

One thing about this board you see on the video: If you use it, you can place the fabric either on a shelf or in totes and store it in such a way that you can easily see everything.
