So I am so excited to get going on my new yard that I am trying to keep myself from going out and start digging in the snow. Of course, that would be a little hard since the ground is frozen so, to keep myself from going crazy, I’ve been looking all over pinterest.

Well, I ran into this project that I know I am going to have to try!!! I had to sell my garden bench when we moved and this would be just too cute to replace it!! Now I know what I can do with some of the dumpster dived wood we’ve been collecting! You can see how they did it here at studiogblog.com but I think it originally came from junkmarketstyle.com

Using Leftover Tomatoes

If you have mounds of tomatoes you have just recently picked from the last of your garden, here is one more idea about what to do with them:

Vegetable Juice

Wash, core and puree the tomatoes in a blender. Add a little lemon juice, onion and celery to taste. This tomato puree makes a great vegetable juice to drink or to cook down and use as spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce, adding extra seasonings.

You can easily freeze tomato puree.

Ketchup Lids

Ketchup lids get so nasty sometimes and are hard to wipe off. Save a lid from an empty bottle of ketchup and run it through the dishwasher. When the lid from the new one gets gooey, replace it with the clean old lid and then run it through the dishwasher so you always have a clean one handy.

If you grow green beans in your garden, leave some of the green beans pods on the plants toward the end of the growing season and just keep them there until they dry up. The seeds in these green bean pods will now be next year’s seeds to plant.

You may not get the exact same variety of green beans to grow but my dad and I have always had a wonderful new crop of fresh green beans from the previous years free seeds.

Just pick the dried up pods before the frost comes, continue to dry the pods indoors, separate the seeds from the pods and plant as usual for the following growing season.

Wintering Over Plants

From: Janet

My Mother always took pieces of her geraniums and planted them in pots in August, only bringing the pots in before we had our first frost. She over wintered these clippings in the basement, then transplanted them out into the garden the following spring, after the last frosts.

My Dad, trained Fuchsias into trees. He would take a Fuchsia and train it up and keep it trimmed so only the top part had leaves. He’d gently tie it to a stick that was as long as he wanted the trunk to be, and this was done in a movable pot.

Then, in the fall, it would come in the house and be kept in the basement until spring. It didn’t get a lot of light in the basement and it only received enough water to keep it alive. The following year, it went back outside.

Use mesh onion bags to store bulbs for the winter. The circulation will keep them from rotting.

The best gardening investment I have ever made was to purchase and electric leaf shredder. The initial investment was a bit over a hundred dollars, but I live in a heavily wooded area and I have made mountains of leaf mulch to use everywhere. I usually have enough mulch just from cleaning out the leaves in flower bed areas, but if I need more I have a limitless supply from the woods.

The shredded leaves are also put to work in my compost bin. Because they are already chopped up, they compost very quickly. I have had to buy replacement filaments, but now realize that I can make my own from the much less expensive rolls. I consider my shredded a wonderful investment.

Save Money Harvesting Your Own Seeds

From: Christy

When you grow marigolds in your garden, make sure to break off the blossoms after they die off and save them in an empty coffee can. Cover it with a plastic lid with holes punched in it. The dead blossoms will continue to dry up and, the following season, you won’t have to buy marigold seeds or marigold plants. In the spring just take your supply of dried up marigold blossoms to the garden area where you want them to grow and simply rotate the dead blossoms between your fingers until they flake apart. Then just lightly cover the area with fine garden soil, water and watch your free marigold plants emerge.

Note from Jill:

You can do this with zinnias and other flowers too. A word of warning, though– Marigolds are beyond hearty and will often come up the next year without reseeding. Ask me how I know this as I pull up yet another marigold plant.

Bean Philosophy – How the garden can cure your troubles!

Laurie put a cute saying on the blog and I didn’t want you all to miss it. She said her great grandma had a saying which went, "When you are tired of life and all of it’s scenes- go out into the garden and hide behind the beans."

I love it and it sure would beat hiding in the bathroom because my kids would always find me there. Once I tried hiding in a closet just to try something different and they told the dog to track me down. The silly dog actually found me. I didn’t think he had it in him. He surprised us all.

Even after my kids were grown and married, they still seemed to have an uncanny knack for finding me. I would go somewhere with a friend and they would track me down. My friend used to shake her head and wonder how they could do that.

It’s nice to be needed… I think… You have to love them anyway.

How To Compost – Make Composting Easy

Tawra is the gardener and as I have said before I’m not quite as good (LOL That’s an understatement – Mike) but I do love, love my compost pile. I don’t make it fancy or complicated. I just find a spot in my yard and start piling things on it.

I think I like it so much because it reduces the amount of things in my trash. Not only that, there are things I hate to deal with like dead, smelly formerly-fresh flowers. With a compost pile, I just run the vase of them out to the compost pile and dump. So easy.

Tawra is the compost expert but I thought I would answer this because Tawra does stir her compost from time to time and does all the "proper things" to hers, mainly because she usually has a huge garden and yard and it is a very important part of her life.

I, on the other hand, am just an average person who does composting on a smaller scale, which I think many of you would like to do. Here is an answer to the reader’s question:

I’m afraid I am a very laid back composter if there is such a thing. I just toss my compostable things in a small corner of the yard, adding to it when I feel like it and never touch it until I need to get some soil from it. I know that experts say you should stir the compost, layer the items in the pile and do a variety of other things to help it along but I never do any of that and I still get compost so I figure, "Why mess with all those things when I get compost without doing them?" (Note from Tawra: you mess with it if you want it to rot faster.)

I have heard people comment about the smell, too but I have never noticed a problem with it. I did once smell my compost pile the day after I put something on it but the next day the smell was gone and that was the only time I have ever smelled anything unpleasant. (I can’t remember where I was living at the time, which could have made a difference.) (Note from Mike: You’re not supposed to put meat in a compost pile and I know if you do, it will stink terribly.)

I am not really picky with my compost. I will add a few banana peels, egg shells and other things like that every few days or once a week but I mostly just include grass clipping, dead flowers and leaves. Sometimes I will add paper towels or napkins but not large amounts of those things. I am not sure if I don’t notice a smell because I don’t put many different things in the compost pile or not.

If you are concerned with smell, I would find a corner away from the house and place some things in a pile for 2 weeks and see what happens. The worst thing that will happen is, at the end of that time, you will just have to scoop it up and put it in the trash. On the other hand, you might find that it works great.

I do suggest that you have some variety in your pile. Don’t just place all fruit peels and egg shells but pile grass clippings and/or leaves on it too.

Often, people make these things so complicated with rules and specific ways that things must be done. Then it gets so confusing we don’t want to even bother to try. I say keep it simple. You don’t have to start out composting every little thing. Just do a little and, as you get the feel for what you are doing, start doing more. Hope this helps.

Make Watering Your Plants Easier

I had to run out to Tawra’s house to water her garden this morning. She had a good idea to save on water and/or to help those who you might need to ask to water for you.

Tawra took a gallon plastic milk jug, cut the bottom off, turned it upside down and poked the pour spout into the ground. Then when I go over there to water, I just fill up the jug and leave it. I don’t have to stand there wondering whether I have watered it enough or whether I wasted a bunch of water watering it too much. You can also just set the jug upright and poke a hole in the bottom for easy drip irrigation.

You can use these tips to make your own watering experience easier, too!

Also, when you need to ask someone to water your plants, bunch all your potted plants together to be watered. This way the person taking care of them doesn’t have to run from one end of the yard to the other with the hose running and wasting water.

I love it when my children make my life easier.

      -Jill

We love green onions around here and I’ve often grown them in the garden! Even though we are moving, I decided to throw some green onion sets in a pot and save some money. A bag of green onion sets cost $1.49 for 80. A bunch of green onions in the store costs over $1.00. Once they start growing you can harvest several batches of green onions and save a lot of money!

Quote of the Day — Weeds

Beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder. For many years I could not understand why everyone else didn’t appreciate all those pretty yellow flowers (dandelions) and that strange purple flower that always grew in my yard. They added a little bright color to my poor balding yard which, most of the time, had more dirt than grass in it.

Alas it seems only my grandchildren and I appreciate their true beauty.

I have tried to look at my yard with more grown up eyes and I try each year make my yard look magazine perfect but, to my daughter’s dismay, I usually fail and fail badly, so I dedicate today’s quote to her:

A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except to grow in rows. : ) : )

      -Jill

Yes, but don’t forget, A weed is a flower out of place.

Where I live, it gets very hot in the summer. My deck doesn’t have any shade and some of my plants needed to be watered twice a day. I was going to buy the granules that hold water from the garden center. A small container of the water granules was $25!

Even though I really needed it to keep my plants going this summer, I just couldn’t come to bring myself to pay that much. One day, I was thinking about it as I was changing my son’s diaper. Then it dawned on me! The same stuff is in baby diapers!!!

I tore open the center of a diaper and scooped out all the cotton with the granules in it into a bowl. Out of curiosity I wanted to see just how much water it would hold. I was hoping for two cups. It held NINE cups of water! That means I could use this stuff in 3-5 containers of plants, depending on the size. I can get diapers for .20 each so the cost isn’t huge.

Remember, Always Think Outside the Box!

      -Tawra

P. S. We had a question about the safety of using these in your pots. I personally don’t have a problem with it. I didn’t use these in my vegetable plants only flowers. Use your own judgment regarding whether or not you want to use them with vegetables.
