Can you freeze blocks of cheese? Also, when you freeze milk jugs do you pour any out? When they freeze
the jug bulges - is this ok?
Thanks,
Jen
You can freeze the cheese but it will be crumbly after it defrosts. I freeze shredded cheese all the time and it’s just fine.
I buy milk in the plastic jugs and don’t pour any out. Yes, it does bulge but it doesn’t hurt it. Be sure to shake after you thaw it as sometimes the cream separates from the milk.

Hi,
I have another question about the milk. My mom says sometimes it turns yellow after it thaws. Do you know why and also is there anything different about freezing A. skim milk and
B. chocolate milk?
thanks so much.
I have a question, too. After your milk thaws out, how long does it last before going bad? I buy 1%.
Thank You!
Amber I’m not real sure about why it turns yellow but it could be the cream has separated. Cream sometimes has a more yellow look to it (they use cream to make butter which is why it is yellow even though they do sometimes add a little coloring to make it a darker yellow). By shaking real hard that should help fix it.
Yes you can freeze skim milk and chocolate milk. Skim milk is even better to freeze because of there being so little fat (or cream) it doesn’t separate as bad. The same goes for 1%.
Karen it usually lasts the same as regular milk. For example if I buy milk and the expiration date says it will expire in 1 week, if I freeze it then thaw it I need to use it within a week.
Be careful because if you get milk on clearance and it has 3 days expiration date you might want to mark it before you freeze it to remind yourself after you freeze it you have to use it within 3 days.
Living by myself I probably wouldn’t use it up within 3 days so I would either divide it before I froze it or would plan to use it in recipes right away when I thawed it. For example I would make up a batch of pudding, custard or potato soup.

I buy skim and found that it doesn’t freeze as well as 2% or whole (maybe it’s just me!). It is fine for cooking or baking, but I do find it tastes a bit different. So I don’t freeze milk as a general rule.
The softer the cheese, the less crumbly it is when thawed. Hard chedder for example, is quite crumbly. Soft mozzarella, I’ve never had a problem thawing and slicing. Or, as Tawra says, just shred!
I buy cheese in a 120 slice block and divide it into smaller bags and freeze it. It may be the type of cheese I buy but I have noticed when I thaw out the cheese in the fridge it doesn’t crumble. If I try to quick thaw it then it will. I hope this helps.
I freeze cheese either shredded or in small blocks.
I like to freeze them in small sections and then when they thaw they are crumbly and easy to add to tea biscuits and eggs. nice small chunks with no grating required.
I freeze mozzarella shredded for toppings or pizza so no take out. If you buy frozen ones adding a bit more cheese makes them gooier which is always good.
