There are no "hard economic times"
For the last year or so everyone has been talking about "these hard economic times" and honestly I think it's just a bunch of hot air from people who got in over their heads and don't want to pay their debts now.
I never did think we were having one. If times were so bad then why is the Applebee's parking lot in town full every lunch and dinner. Why is it 3,000 $1,000 dolls sold out in 1 minute on QVC, why are grocery baskets full of junk food, sodas and bottled water?
One of my pet peeves it the news making thing out to be worse than they really are. Well, yesterday Mike was watching the news and they said how the economy had gone up the last 2 quarters. They measure a recession by a drop for 4 quarters in a row. It only went down for 2 and then up for two. They then went on to say that "maybe we need to redefine the term reason because people are sure feeling it". Augh!!!!
People are having problems because they don't want to give up the fun stuff to pay for necessary items. They want to keep their "standard of living" which is some of the highest in the world but they don't want to have to actually pay for it or heaven forbid we work first, save up the money to pay for it and then buy it debt free.
Now, before I get my inbox full of email, yes, I know there are some people out there who have lost jobs and are really hurting but I'm not talking about folks who are careful and are using their money wisely.
Mike and I don't worry about a rescission. Why? Because we are getting our ducks in a row now so that if there is a real problem some day then we can make it through.
We aren't even close to living like they had to in the depression so you need to stop acting like we are and take responsibility for your actions and pay your bills! It's not that bad!
Ok, I'm stepping down off the soapbox now. :-)

You hit the nail on the head with this post! You are so right. I am tired of all of the whining, and the news media spewing doom and gloom every day. The good news is barely mentioned, but the bad sure does make the headlines.
If you make frugality a lifestyle, and live within your means, and save for the future, you can ride out the tough times.
Keep on telling it like it is!
AMEN, AMEN, and AMEN!!!!
The only people I REALLY see struggling right now are the people who have depended upon credit to maintain a life style above their means for too long. They are dealing with some consquences of their actions that are hard and whining to anybody that will listen.
I agree with you Tawra, some people may be struggling due to circumstances beyond their control like unemployment. However, I personally haven't met or seen any of those people.
I hope this "economic depression" will be a wake up call to people that we MUST begin living within our means and stop abusing credit!
Amazing post! Me and my fiance are having a hard time but it is because of past mistakes. If we were not cutting back on things it would be even worse. So many people feel like they are entitled to certain things and I think it is a horrible attitude to have. You have to work hard to have nice things. Our only major, major problem is the gas! You can't prepare enough for the way that gas has risen. We are even down to one car and carpooling but oh well! Thanks for your posts! I really enjoy them, your website and your cookbook! You are an inspiration to everyone trying to cut back.
Thanks for bringing this up. The media tends to latch on to something and just worry it to death. Those already on a cash basis, and not living beyond their means, are probably doing fine.
I personally have not changed anything about my spending- nor am I feeling any pinch - but then I have been living the frugal life for many many years and always put something into savings, even now. And just for the record, my take home pay is less than $1000 a month, but I live well :)
My only money fear for the future is that my property taxes are going to double or probably triple due to the addition/remodeling I have been doing on my house...(Nothing to do with the economy) I paid cash for it all, of course, or I wouldn't have done it!
our newspaper has run ads on the front page about how bad things are....the first article was about how a local pizza place is noticing everyone is charging their slices of pizza, the second was how people "have" to charge their morning cup of Dunkin donuts...DUH! how about not going out for pizza or coffee GOD Forbid anyone should have to give anything up!!
But I do think it is a scarey time, we are a one income family whose heating bill has tripled and my husband is in sales and business is slow so we have to ajust, but we might have to cut back on paying the extra on our mortgage or some retirement savings...
