Make-up Question

I have been trying to find a good foundation. I love the Mary Kay cream to powder foundation but it makes my face break out.

I tried Cover Girl Outlast and it didn't make my face break out but didn't cover that well.
Those were my two top and I've tried a lot of others but no luck.

Any suggestions for a foundation that give good coverage, lasts all day and doesn't make your face break out?

Hi, Tawra,
I use Maybelline mineral powder foundation. It covers really well, but is not as heavy as using a cream-based foundation. My typical day involves putting makeup on around 7 am and wearing it until around 10 pm or so, and I have had no problems with this staying on.

There is a book called "Don't go to the makeup counter without me" by Paula Begoun that list all types of makeup and rates them good and bad.She has a website too.

Sorry - due to my frugalness, I only buy lipstick - no other make-up.
Think of all the money I have saved over the years! :)

Have you tried an Oil of Olay hyperallergenic foundation?

Hello, Tawra,
I had the same problems your having and worse until indtroduced to JAFRA foundation make up. Using it has actully improved my skin. Their web site allows you to see for your self what ingredients are used and search for a rep. in your area or you can order from the site. I'd try finding a rep. I can trust first. Buying when on sale you will pay no more and maybe even less then what you would at a store. I paid less then what was expected for some well known brands at wal mart and other such stores. So don't let the JAFRA prices scare you. It does go on sale!

Look into Mineral Make up. I've been using it for years. I don't care for Avon's line or Christina's line, but Bare Minerals and Mary Kay make a nice powder option. Haven't had a breakout in years!

Hi Tawra,

I use mineral powder foundations. The two I use are L'Oreal Bare Naturale or the Bare Minerals. The L'Oreal is around $12.00 at Walmart. I watch for lower prices in drug store sale ads and can usually find a $2.00 off coupon in Sunday papers. Sometimes, I can get the Bare Minerals (new and sealed) off of Ebay for under $10.
I LOVE the mineral powder foundation! I find the coverage is awesome and it never breaks out my skin. Give it a try and I hope you love it!

Bare Mineral. Nuff said. Not cheap, but a little goes a long way and it works great. Roxie

I agree that the Bare Minerals has great coverage with no break out problems, however if you have noticeable pores, they will look even larger with the powder minerals, because of how it "sits" on the skin's surface. A liquid that I have used for years with great coverage and no breakouts is L'Oreal's True Match in color N4 for tan skin... hey I am a California girl :), but also love the fact that it has an SPF of 17, and we all need sunscreen daily as we get older, so as to not look old! :) Good Luck!

MAC Studio FX powder--you won't need a seperate foundation. It will make you look completely flawless. You can read reviews in that book "Don't go to the makeup counter without me".

Tawra,
I have very good luck with Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. It has a good amount of coverage but is still very light feeling on your face. As a makeup sold in any drugstore its not to expensive and goes on sale quite frequently and thats when I stock up. The feel and coverage is similar to the Mary Kay, maybe a little creamier. Try it.

Hi Tawra,

I have Rosachia and have found that
Physicians Formula is the best for
great coverage and no break-outs.
Now this is more pricey but it last for a long time. I have not found any coupons for this, but its worth a try. Some Drug Stores give you a guarantee that if you don't like something they will give you your money back. I live in PA and that is the policy here. I hope this helps. I love your site and give your cookbook out as a wedding present.

I can only use Clinique. It's a bit expensive, but I don't break out. I have to use an abrasive pore cleanser everday - the Clearskin blackhead pore cleanser as well. Even without this, Clinique works well for me.

Ebay and Amazon carries it...sometimes I can find my HTF color(fair). The Clinique superfit version is the best for summer - lightweight and it stays on. Just don't ever buy their moisturizer...it clogged my pores something awful.

Hi Tawra,
I have been using Clinique for quite a few years now since I break out with other types of makeup, and I've tried many in the past. It is a little more than others, but a little goes a long way. One thing I have learned in addition to finding the right makeup is to make sure your cleansing routine isn't adding to your breaking out. I use Purpose soap to wash my face instead of creams because I have oily skin. I also use as an astringent a mixture of half water and half witch hazel. Good Luck. Christine

I actually use Mary Kay's new mineral powder foundation. It lasts a long time.
I have rosacea and break out all the time, from everything! I even broke out from the dermatologist's make up lab! BUT, Mary Kay doesn't do that to me. Worth a shot...

Also, just wanted to let you know my husband LOVES your cookbook. He said "Everything in here sounds good", which is quite a compliment! Honey baked chicken gets on the menu at least 2 times a month here and we never have left overs!

I use Neutrogena SkinClearing Oil-Free Makeup Flawless Finish Blemish Treatment. It contains salicylic acid. I place spf 15 on my skin before the foundation.

I am a Mary Kay rep (just so I don't have to pay full price) and I love their medium coverage foundation liquid; it stays matte all day w/o powder. The full coverage is for dry skin and it's NOT matte, which can look a little shiny over the course of the day. I do stray if I get a good deal on something, just to try it, and I found the Rimmel Lasting Finish Mineral Enriched Foundation is comparable to the old Mary Kay Day Radiance foundation formula: creamy and great coverage. It also stays pretty matte, like the newer MK foundation. I have super sensivite skin that will break out for ANYTHING, and so far this Rimmel has been great. (Also on sale at Walgreens a lot and often has coupons in paper). Rimmel's mascara is not so great but that's another story. ALso if you want to really get nice stuff, get some Bare Minerals powdered foundation. I bought a jar three years ago and still using it. That stuff stays perfect all day, it covers, and will not break you out. Get the Bisque to use as a concealer to go with your foundation if you need to cover anything. I like to switch around once in awhile but these three things come in the light shade of pale I need, they don't break out my skin, and they don't just disappear over the course of the day. Good luck! Angie

Try Bare Essentuals Mineral Makeup. I've had acne and oily skin all my life and this product covers well and does not make me break out. Its very light on your skin, but it covers like a liquid, and looks more natural. The product is a little pricey, but the kit you get when you order lasts a really long time. You can probably find a similar, less expensive product in Walmart if you try. Good luck!

Tawra, I have to agree with the Bare Minerals people. It is pricier than the drug store brands, but I'm telling you the truth, it ends up being less overall because you only need to use so little at a time, the coverage is wonderful and color matching is a breeze. I started using it 6 years ago, and have NEVER looked back. It stays on all day, doesn't sweat off, and no breakouts!

I've always used Shaklee and really like it. Plus, I think it's higher quality and less contaminants than products off the store shelves for putting on your skin, which absorbs everything into your body.

It's confusing finding the right foundation for your skin. Talk to a cosmetician at a large drugstore. Department stores are good too but their products are too expensive for those 'living on a dime'. Physicians Formula products give excellent coverage, have built-in sunscreen, and are affordable. I have scarring from skin cancer and this brand was recommended to me following treatment. Shiseido also has excellent products but they are outrageously expensive...

Just want to parrot those that have recommended Bare Essentuals and Physician's Formula. My MIL uses BE and loves it. I use PF, their mineral foundation powder (excellent coverage w/o looking overly made-up) and bronzing veil. It's around $12 at Walmart but last a LONG time. I'm prone to breakouts, but do not break out using this stuff. I use Castile soap to cleanse and emu oil to moisturize. I have oily, acne-prone skin and this regimen has been great. The biggest factor in my complexion is my diet. If I eat a high-sugar diet, you can see it on my face! Arrgh!

I hate to wear foundation but have found that putting a drop of the Mary Kay medium-coverage foundation in with my time-wise age fighting moisturizer sunscreen works great. I don't get all oily, I don't break out, I don't feel like I am wearing a lot of stuff, it lasts for ever. I am also protected from the sun on my face without having to worry.
