Bunch of reader tips.

Thanks for sharing guys! Tawra

Hi Tawra,

I thought I would send along another idea that
is fun for kids. Making homemade peanut
butter. It is so easy. We just put peanuts and
I add a small amount of oil (we use light olive
oil because that is what we have in our house).
Chop then blend in your blender. You can make
it as crunchy or creamy as you want. This is a
fun activity at our house and I thought you
might want to pass it along to your readers.

You might not need to add the oil but I don't
want to break my blender so I always add a
little to get it going. It is also nice because
you can use unsalted peanuts if anyone in the
house is watching sodium. I only make this in
small batches (which is fine because it is so
easy to make and so yummy fresh).

Have a good day,

Tracy

I was reading about the baked potato in the oven
and I do mine in the crockpot now. They are
almost as good as the oven and you don't heat up
the house! If you like the peel crispy just put
it in the oven for the last 10 minutes. I wash my
potatoes and wrap them in foil and throw them in
the crockpot for about 4 hrs. on low. Tracey

Hi....a good place to get menu ideas is from the school luch menu, more like dinner than lunch....
I have lil bowls, (gerber baby bowls)...that we use all the time (ice cream, desert, etc)....the kids can have that size bowl of cereal, and then if their still hungry...toast or muffin, etc.......when we have company my husband is always apologizing for the size of the plates.....(8")....we have one large "serving platter" which is what most people eat on....we also use 7 oz cups for juice and milk....I feel we eat less, (I know I do) but using smaller dishes, makes it easy to do portion control....dd

I was reading through your list of snack ideas, and some of them look fabulous, and are things I had never thought of. I have one caution for you, though. My friend is a nurse, and she pointed out that frozen grapes are NOT a safe snack, for any age. Her cousin had one get stuck in his throat (he was an adult), and they couldn't get it out, and he died. Think of what happens if you stick your tongue on a frozen flag pole.... same idea. The grape can freeze to the skin in your throat.

I really appreciate your ministry, I love your newsletters and tips, and I bought myself your cook book for Mother's Day, it's wonderful!

Thank you,

Christy

i would like to know, if you know tawra, the poster said to put foil on the baked potatoe and then cook it in the crock pot for like 4 hrs... do you add any water or anything as it is cooking?... just curious bc if you dont, wont it burn or something like that?...
also, the poster said about using the smaller size plates for everyone to eat on, it reminded me of what my brother and his wife did when their kids were little... depending on how old they were, they ate off of the smaller plate or even a saucer ... this way they ate what was on their plate and well, no wastage... and my sis in law only cooked what she thought would be eaten... making the vegi's the main course and not the meat or starches... or making the homemade vegi soup and salad the main meal and then came the meat and potatoes... she is from portugal and said her mother always did that (she has 8 brothers and sisters!) and it stretches her food bill...
and for dessert, mainly fruit... if they had any cookies or cupcakes or stuff like that, it was bc my sis in law made them homemade (the cookies) or the cake from a mix...
she would never buy cookies or stuff like that already made and you could pick it up from the shelf or the bakery...
the only time she did buy a cake from the supermarket is for special occasions only...

thanks for all you do for us ... i love reading the posts from jill as well as you (tawra) and mike... i know jill has posted several times b4 in the past, but it is nice to see her posts on a continuing basis...
i think we could learn alot from our parents and grandparents... my mom, who is 79, is always telling us ways to save a dollar here and there... but i do wish my grandmother was alive and could tell us how she was able to survive and save money and buy several houses during the depression...
i have learned so much from your site and from the advice you have even sent to me thru email...
thank you so much for all you do for all of us...
i have told all of my friends and family about your site and well, i must say, you have even helped them too...
i appreciate all of what you do and i know at times, bc of your health issues, it is hard but i just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart and let you know i appreciate all you do for me, my family and my friends :D

I just wanted to add that making your own peanut butter is such a healthy thing. Most peanut butter companies extract the valuable peanut oil to sell separately, and then simply replace with cheaper cottonseed or palm oil. You'll notice this on the labels. Anyway, love your blog!

You can also make great "butters" with other kinds of nuts, almonds, hazelnuts (filberts) and pecans all make great butters. I buy them raw and lightly toast them in the oven until golden then grind them in the food processer or blender with a little bit of canola or olive oil, add a pinch of kosher salt to taste. Makes a great change from peanut butter! You can also add a bit of cocoa powder to the hazelnut to make a delious spread that also is great to add as a filling for layer cakes. Add brown sugar to the pecan butter for a spread that is great on sliced apples. I make alot of this as I live in the South and can often get pecans for free....people will almost pay you to clean up their yards!

I buy the nuts in the fall when they are cheaper and store raw in the freezer for up to six months. Toasted nuts can be frozen up to a year without tasting stale.

I do baked potatoes in my crock pot. I scrub them, prick with a fork, and put them on low for about 4 hours I believe. I don't even bother with the foil. You can put a little butter or margarine on their skins if you want.
