Operation Christmas Child
Suggestion for your readers:
With Christmas approaching we want to teach our children to think of others. Here is a great way. -
THROUGH Operation Christmas Child.
This is where a child packs a simple shoe box with simple toys, school supplies and hygiene items such as soap, toothbrush/paste and includes a letter. This shoe box gift is dropped of at a local drop-off point during National Collection Week which is November 11-19th. You can go to www.samaritanspurse.com and type in your zip code. It will list all the local drop-off points in your community. This is nationwide. These gifts will then be distributed around the world to children suffering in war-torn countries, poverty-stricken areas, refugee camps and orphanages. There are 50 million reasons to be involved... and counting. This year the goal is 8 million shoe boxes world-wide. Last year 7.6 million were delivered. Children around the country are participating.
For additional information, go to www.samaritanspurse.com or call 1-800-353-5949. While 50 million shoe boxes have been distributed, there are millions more children still waiting to hear that God loves them unconditionally--and it all starts with one person packing one shoe box gift.

Tawra,
I wanted to share something that my daughter and I do at Christmas time every year. We get in touch with the activities director at our local nursing home and ask for the first name of a client who has no family. Then we take a morning, hit the stores and purchase a gift for that person. We rarely spend more then $20. In the past we have done a lap blanket, large print magazines or puzzle books, and one my daughter chose a soft stuffed cat for a lady. It doesn't have to be much, its the thought behind it. Then Christmas Eve we take it to the home and drop it off under the tree. Christmas morning comes with a special gift for the person. We usually sign the card with a simple "We wish you a merry Christmas S and D" Be sure to ask about special needs or wants. If candy is on your list, ask if it should be sugar free. This is a nice way to remember our elder folks who sometimes get forgotten during the holiday season. And it has taught my daughter that Christmas time is about giving, not getting.
