Crying Uncle.

I decided on a new washer and dryer. I am going to buy the Whirlpool Duet and I decided to get the set. Several people really love theirs and it seemed like the best fit. I also would love to have a dryer with an automatic sensor turning it off when it's done.

It is going to be a tight fit in my small laundry room but I think it will work. I will have to walk in the room first, open the door, unload the clothes and put them in the dryer and then close the washer door before I can get out but I think it will work.

Now, the good part. After I decided which one I wanted I went to Lowe's. I started there because they will match any price plus give you 10% off if you find a better deal in town.

I went and they were $998 and $898. They had $100 rebate plus free delivery and removal of your old set.

So I started with basically $1700 for the set.

I then called 4 other stores in town, the biggest: Sears, Home Depot, Best Buy and a local appliance shop.

Best Buy had the same deal. So I then decided on an off chance to look online. I found www.pricegrabber.com

I typed in the washer and dryer I wanted and found places online. I made sure that I had the price with the shipping added in since Lowe's was giving free shipping.

Believe it or not I found a place that had it for $1732 including shipping!!

So, I printed out the info. and took it to Lowe's. I found the salesman that I used that morning and said "I'm back to get my washer and dryer and I've been working hard". He just laughed.

I then told him that I found a set online for $1732 including shipping and they also gave the $100 rebate. He took a few minutes to ask his supervisor if it was ok and he said yes so we were working on the deal. They had a problem with the computer taking the lower price so they gave me an even lower price of $1709!

So... I got my washer and dryer for $1609!! Almost $90 less for about 1 hour's worth of work!! (That's how much Mike makes in a day at the TV station!)

Mike came stopped by on his way home from work to see if we were still there. I told him "I've been earning my keep! hehehe" The salesman said "She sure has! She has us pinned on the floor crying "Uncle". LOL I said "well, I run a frugal living website so I better practice what I preach".

So, we went home excited about the new washer and dryer. I am going to have them deliver it on Tuesday to give me a few days to try and sell our old set. If I can't sell it then I will have them haul it off.

But... there's more.....

Today I woke up and Lowe's had their sets for 20% off! Ugh!!!!!! That was another $40 off the price that I got!

So... I got in the car and headed over to Lowe's. Just for asking they gave me a refund for the difference so I got my set for $1565 total!! YES, YES, YES!! Now the total was $135 below the "sale" price at Lowe's to start. Not bad for about 1 1/2 hours worth of work & about $2 in extra gas money for the refund.

So... on Tuesday I am going wash, wash, wash away!

Tawra,

Don't forget to try freecycle.org if you can't sell your appliances. Someone may be able to work on them or use them for parts and they won't go into the dump! I always try that first before I put items into the trash. Good luck!

My local utility co. give rebates for purchasing low water use front loaders, yours might too. Also some of the front loaders stack if space is a problem.

If you have a small laundry room you could try having them stack the dryer on top of the washer. I have only a laundry closet and had them side by side for 3 years. I just had them stacked and have room for shelving on the side--I love it!

What about finding someone that could use them, since you were just given the dryer.

Check to see if any problems have cropped up with these machines. We found out our fancy Fridgaire set has a sensor that shuts it down if it gets clogged. We have a Lab that sheds a small dog's worth of hair on her bedding. Because of this, the Fix It guy has ad to come and dimantle the machine to clean out this sensor. The average homeowner can't.

Hi Tawra,
I bet paying it forward to someone else in need would make you feel wonderful. God has blessed you with a lot this year! During this often difficult season for many I bet there must be a family in need or even a single mom out there who would be thrilled.

Thanks guys for the freecycle reminder. Actually we use them all the time.

The problem is they show up about 1/2 the time and I didn't feel like messing with people saying they were going to come and not show up this weekend. We needed about $100 more to cover the price over what Mike worked overtime.

I was going to put them on there Sunday night if it wasn't sold. I figured we would at least give away one dryer since one was given to us.

As for giving, we do that all the time. About 15-20% of our income is given away to people, causes and organizations we feel need the help. We also give a lot of time and recourses such as books away for free also.

So we do give all the time.

You are going to really enjoy the washer.
Do you have a Conn's store in your area? Here the Conn's store beat Lowe's price by more than $200.00 for the same machine...I was surprised. I did what you did, I started at Conn's though, went got their best price, then went to Lowe's..got their price, called the sales person on the phone..Lowe's person told them the price..Conn's beat the price by 10%...then a few days later Conn's had the machines on sale..saved an additional 5% more. I was so happy. Roxie

I forgot to ask you, did you get them to throw in the pedistal stand? I did on the washer. (I don't have the dryer) It was one of the perks I got for buying at Conn's over Lowes. I like the drawer because I can keep extra detergent there etc. It is a great place to keep extras..Roxie

It's great that you got Lowe's to do all that. I just got a brand new Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer for $800 for both by going to a scratch and dent store. Both of them had a little dent on the left side. I had wanted this type of washer and dryer but didn't want to pay the high price for them. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!!

Tawra, that is funny, I just bought this same set at Best Buy this past week. My dryer died and we just went ahead and bought the set. We bought the floor model with 10% off. Long story short, the salesperson said we wouldn't be able to get it until Dec. 15 and that he had promised the floor model to someone that was coming in. 30 minutes prior to the store closing, the people still had not shown up. My husband said, "we have money in hand now". The salesperson asked one of the managers who said, quite rudely, no. As we were leaving the store, another manager heard my husband say he would never shop there againa and stopped to ask why. Aftr the explanation, we ended up, with tax paying $1059.00. We picked them up the next day. And I love them!

Just wanted to give you a warning about some mold issues with front loading washers. Sales people don't tell you about these things, but you can Google "mold in front loading washers" to find out more about this.

The problem seems to be that 1) because of the design, they are air-tight & water never drains completely out of the drum, so you really need to leave the door open so that they can dry out (something you might have a problem with, with the set up in your laundry room) and 2) using non-HE laundry detergent and liquid fabric softener causes a build up that gets moldy, really smelly, and is a health hazard. Liquid detergents, as well as using cold water all the time make the problem worse too.

Make sure you do a couple of loads a week with HOT water (the sanitary cycle, the last load of the day), and wipe the rubber boot dry and leave the door open when you're not using it.

I understand that many manuals tell you to do a monthly washer clean-out cycle, which many people don't bother to do, so they end up with the problem.

It seems to be easier to keep it from happening, than to get rid of it once you have it so taking precautions up front, IMO, is a good idea.

One solution that I read about on many forums that really seems to work is a product called PureWasher. You can buy it at www.smellywasher.com. Also, one of the washer companies makes some tablets called Affresh, that you use once a month to clean out any build-up.

Using Oxy-Clean seems to help prevent the problem, as does using borax with your detergent and vinegar in the rinse.

Front loaders are great washers and I'm really looking forward to getting one when my top loader dies, but I'm horribly allergic to mold so I was glad to find these things out NOW, so that I don't end up with a nightmare of a mold problem when I do get one.

HTH...enjoy your new washer! :-)
