My trip to the vet.

Well, yesterday I made a whirlwind trip to Higginsville, MO, east of Kansas City to go see the doctor in nutritional medicine.

I hadn't planned on going that quickly but they had an opening and mom could watch the kids so i took it. I also was supposed to go back to the hormone doctor next week so i kind of wanted to get that in before I see her. It was 4 1/2 hours up there and back. Man I was tired!

Well, it was encouraging. He said he thought that I wasn't absorbing the nutrients because the other doctor had me on to high of dose of vitamins.

After spending 3 hours we with we came up with a program that I'm going to try. It's funny because he only charged $20 for 3 hours!!

1- I need to drink 4 oz. of water every hour. I do that already so that won't be hard.
2-no sugar or refined stuff.
3-Take a pre-natal vitamin
4-extra magnesium
5-vitamin E
6- Omega 3's
7- Iodine
8-check the ph in my urine
9-when I get really sick take potassium bicarbonate.
10-go off the prozac
11-if depression comes back then take 300 mg of 5-HTP

When I told him that I had tried the Omega 3's and 5- HTP before for depression and pain he asked how much I was taking and I needed 3 times the amount of each.

He also thinks my thyroid is low so I need to try and get it boosted. I took my temperature for a month and it never got above 97.2. They say that's a sign of a messed up thyroid even when your tests come back normal.

he said that the ph in my body was 7.6 and I needed to be down around 6,4-6.8. He said that I am too alkaline which is why when I take an alka-seltzer it makes me feel better. It gives a quick shot of acid to swing me the other way. He said the new supplements should get me back down to a more normal ph.

All in all I feel good about trying this stuff again. The prozac has been helping some but not much and the side effects aren't great to live with. :-) (Although since I'm on it I don't care. LOL) I would love to go off it and am going to give a try.

Wish me luck! I am going to need it. Going off sugar (again), prozac and PMSing in the same week isn't a great combo! You might pray for my pour hubby too! LOL

I go back in a month to see if any of it is working.

Good Luck. Although I would personally hesitate before stopping the Prozac cold turkey. You may get horrible symptoms. Also, is it safe? You were prescribed those for a reason. If it were me I would just go over the list with my MD.

But I do hope you feel better.

So does he want you to take synthroid or something else for your thryoid? This is very interesting to me, since I have FM and CFS and other problems. You can email me privately if you want to.

Hi Tawra,

I also have FM and CFS, along with arthritis everywhere and a slow-functioning thyroid. Many of the things on your list I'm already doing or taking, but the pre-natal vitamins is an interesting addition. Did the doc say why pre-natal vits?

I love your newsletter, and will add you to my prayer list!

Love & Blessings,
Anna

what is 5-HTP?... i have never heard of it...
be careful with the prozac... my sister was on that and the zoloft and developed a mass on her liver... i am not sure if this contributed to it ...
also, what do you mean by no refined anything (re: the part near the list with sugar)...
i hope this works for you...
my prayers are with you and your whole family.. :D

Tawra, I have had Fibro for over 10 years now. I know about your saying how your hands hurt. I was first diagnosed when I dropped my son at 6 months of age, into the playpen because my hands just gave out. I also was on Prozac for several years but then it stopped working. Take it slow when stopping and wean yourself off or you will have really bad side effects. I just started taking Lyricia which the FDA just approved for the treatment of Fibro. You might want to ask your doctor to try it. Hope this helps.

Hi Tawra, First time reader of your blog. I am SO excited for you! I have been reading like a crazy women about the very treatment suggested for you. I have Fibro too, Dx 12 years ago. So bad Soc Sec found me disabled. I am on Welbutrin and Cymbalta and Nurotin. Vicodin, fiorinal and soma are PRN.I stumbles onto Dr. John Lowe's (Colorado)website and Mary Shoman on about.com :thyroid .( I did the quiz and answered 34 out of 41 questions *positive* for an under active thyroid) I now swear that all of my Fibro symptoms are an underactive thyroid.I have to wait until January to get into a doctor (At university hospital, Stony Brook, NY)that I HOPE has the same views as the doc you saw. The one I *want* to see, does not accept my insurance. I am already following Suzanne Somers basics for eliminating sugar, white flour etc. That has made a difference in how I feel already. I want SO bad to be Hypothyroid! I too have been doing basal temps and have come in 97.3 and under for about a month now. It sounds like you found a good doctor. Since the changes in endocrinology(2003), the "normal range" for results has been adjusted. To make a long story short... the "Normal" Range has been WRONG. So Lab results were incorrect, and patients were told "your results are in the Normal range"... see ya later, bye! I could write a book here about all I have learned in the past 4 months reading these websites. I feel like I've spent 12 years in bed because of a damn results chart error. Ive never prayed for a diagnoses so hard in my life. I could have my life back with some Armour Thyroid! Feel free to e-mail me. I love your site!!

Have you ever heard of candida or yeast infection causing CFS and FM? Candida or yeast can grow anywhere in your body, not just vaginally. It can cause CFS, FM, MS, autism, just to name a few. My youngest daughter suffered from autism and I, CFS and FM from candida. We started taking prescription antifungal, nystatin. Kept a food diary and eliminated sugar, yeast, corn, milk, wheat, gluten, soy, strawberries, and fish. (Yes, the fish oil we thought would help for the EFA was harming us.)After the "die off" reaction, our anxiety and irritability greatly improved. You can get alot more information at www.yeastconnection.com and www.greatplainslaboratory.com and www.knowthecause.com. I too struggle with the alkalinity. Mine had been at 8. I felt awful. When you have chronic candida, your body can not absorb minerals easily because your intestines are coated in the stuff. You have to eliminate some of the yeast and use forms of vitamins/minerals that are better absorbed. Some doctors will give IV vitamins or in a shot. I took a powder and I take a liquid B-12. It helps tremendously for energy. Have your doctor do a iron panel blood test. My iron level was fine, but my ferritin level, which is iron protein, what your body stores was almost non-existent. I take foltrin, it's a prescription iron, B-12,Vitamin C supplement, in addition to the liquid B12, powdered multi, and
powdered vitamin c.

BTW, After taking all these measures, I now think clearly, my tired and achiness is gone and my daughter's "autism" is cured!

You're welcome to email me and I could share more ideas/resources with you.

Blessings,
Calina

I am interested to find out if this works for you. I am doing research on being more eco minded and taking a more natural approach, but it has a huge impact on the grocery budget because being green where I live is not cheap. I wouldn't want to take the prozac either so anything to help with out drugs would be great to me!
