Help needed with "new" table.

I purchased a new dining room table and chairs at a yard sale for $65 this weekend. I need to finish the top, but it won't be much to sand it down and put a coat of polyurethane on it.

I will try and put pictures on the blog as I get it done. The only bad part, according to the paint store, is that I have to let it set for 2 weeks! I haven't had much success in the past with polyurethane curing correctly so I hope this one goes better. I've only let it set a couple days before so I hope the 2 weeks will work better. Anyone have success refinishing your wood table top? If so please send me tips and what product you used!

Hello,
Try Homer Forby's Facelift. It is quick easy and does a wonderful job. Then look around at yard sales etc to get a piece of glass for your table top. You may even be able to get a piece at a glass shop (ie, cut wrong etc). There are little rubber grommets that go on the underside to keep the glass off the table so it can "breathe" but still protect the table.

Really?! This is disheartening as we are about to refinish our dining table. We haven't ever done it before. We also are going to recover the cloth in the chairs, too.

I don't know if there's a difference between polyurethane for a floor and a table, but I used Varathane, a water-based polyurethane, on the floor. A water-based polyurethane takes more coats but they are applied every 2 hrs so it only takes a day plus it could be walked on after 24 hrs. And cleaning the brush and pan is easy with water. It has held up for almost 4 years now.

We got a free table a year ago from a friend. I love the look of painted furniture, so we painted it. After 3 coats of paint, sanding between, I used Paste Wax to finish the table. I did 6 coats of wax on the top, 3 on the rest of the table. That was a year ago and it still looks great! Every 6 months or so I plan to add another coat of wax. It's a great finish, not totally matte, but not shiny at all!
Good luck!

It's been many years since I last did a dining table top, but because they take so much wear, I always put on a couple of coats of high gloss polyurethane finish, and then use a satin finish for my final coat. It gives you the hard finish without the shiny look that shows every little scratch.

I was reading on some diy websites and they said for a minimum of 24, but nothing said 2 weeks.

We used a product with the brand name Olde Village. We didn't do a table, but a high chair that gets wiped down alot and it's held up really well. We used the stain and then used the clear satin. Hope this helps!

I just asked this question at Benjamin Moore today and was told to of course sand it, then prime with an oil based paint and then paint a few coats with oil based paint. Then let it cure for 1 week. Apparently oil based paint will "harden" with curing. I'll be interested in what you find out since I'm going to be painting my dining room table soon.
