Really Bad Day, Really Good Day and Sold!

Yesterday was a really bad day.....

On Friday afternoon we smelled an electric burning smell in the kitchen but didn't see smoke or find anything wrong. None of the cords on the appliances were hot and everything seemed to still be working. Yesterday (Sat. morning) I woke up to water all over the kitchen floor and everything defrosted in my freezer. Then I realized that the fridge wasn't cooling. We had discovered the burning smell, something went out on our 3 year old fridge! (Of course please envision this in the middle of painting the living room.)

I got as much as I could save into the big freezer and started calling the realtor and then the home warranty people. They said we had no warranty on record! So I called the realtor again.

In the middle of this, all of the sudden my washer starts making this horrible squeaking noise, plus I was trying to do orders and then my printer started acting up! By this point I was starting to have major anxiety problems. With the kids all running around, 3 appliances down (remember the dryer broke a few days ago) and trying to paint I was getting overloaded.

On the next call to the realtor she tells me "now don't panic" (yeah right) "but I just got a call and you have a showing at noon. " I just knew that was going to happen. She said not to worry about it that she told them the fridge had died and were were painting so the house was a mess but they were really interested in our house and had sold theirs so they wanted to look at it.

I was starting to have a major meltdown. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me because 2 hours earlier I just told Mike how I hadn't felt that good in a while. I started a new supplement and I think it was kicking in and making me feel better. Well Mike gave me some herbal anxiety pills he used to use to help calm him down from his old job and would you believe I started choking on it! We (mom, Mike and I) just all burst out laughing! We could just see it, "Woman dies choking on anti-anxiety pills!"

So we got over that, mom hung the clothes on the line, Mike started calling the repair people and I was still trying to get orders done. Well, no one works on appliances on the weekends around here and guess what, it's a holiday on Monday so they don't do it then either.

We gave up on the fridge and painting and Mike took the kids and Mom and I got the house cleaned up to show. While we were doing that I realized I couldn't stop shaking. I finally figured out that I think I was having a reaction to some other new supplements that I started too. Thankfully we figured that out so I knew that I wasn't going crazy.

As we were cleaning the house it started to downpour. I mean a HUGE downpour....with my 2 loads of laundry on the line! I just couldn't believe it. We just had to leave the laundry. As a matter of fact it's still on the line because it was too wet to bring in and do anything with.

Mom and I got the house all cleaned up and we left to get a bite to eat while they were showing the house. We came back because they said they would only be about 10 minutes and they were still here so we sat in the car down the street and waited.....for an hour!

They finally left and mom and I went to go inside (i had to go to the restroom really bad) and we were locked out of the house! I had forgotten and Mike had the keys on my keychain which he used to take the kids. Fortunately the neighbors let me use their bathroom and then Mike came home.

Then yesterday was a really good day.....

The realtor called and said they were meeting at 3p.m. and going to make an offer. Mom and I finished painting the wall in the living room while Mike went to my brother's to borrow his tiny fridge so we could have some milk and eggs.

The wall turned out wonderful! It was worth the work! We waited around but I was in a huge amount of pain and was really sick from painting. I finally I got in the tub and then put on my pj's at 5:00. By this point I was so sick and tired I could hardly stand up. Well, at 5:15 the realtor called and said she had the offer and would be over.

We ate dinner which was take out that Mike went and picked up and I laid on the couch until she came around 6:45. We got David in bed and listened to the offer.

It was $1,000 below our asking price, $118,000 and we had to close on June 22. We were going to accept it but the only thing was they wanted us out on closing. That would mean we would have to be all packed up before the papers were signed on June 22. Usually we ask for 3 days after closing to get packed up because if something happens and it doesn't close all your stuff is in a moving van.

We spent an hour debating about what to do. That would mean that we have to find a house to buy in 10 days to close by June 22. So far we haven't even come close to finding anything we like for a new house. We just didn't know what to do. Do we sell it and be out from under this one even if we don't have a new house yet? That would mean a few weeks or months in a motel. (We couldn't stay with mom because her plumbing couldn't handle 5 more people.) Plus we run our business from home, where would we set that up at?

After an hour of going back and forth and me getting so sick from my adrenaline rushing that I felt I like was going to fall off the chair we decided to have faith and we signed it. We had been praying for a quick sale and God sold it in 11 days so we figured He must have something out there for us.

So.... our house is SOLD and we have 10 days to find a new one. Wow, this day was like a big roller coaster! I went to bed 3 hours ago and still can't sleep. Please pray that we can find a new house. I really don't want to be living in a motel with our stuff in storage but I don't want to panic and give in and just "make do" with another house like we did with this one.

It will be interesting to see what happens!

Great news! I would really recommend that you rent an apartment for 3 months or so. Give yourself some time to choose your next house. It will be well worth it. It means moving twice, but it will be worth it in the long run. I'm speaking from experience - we just did this last fall. BUT, it was so nice not worrying that our sale was going to fall through at the last minute and we would be responsible for two houses. If you are in an apartment for the summer, you would have a pool to help entertain the kids! :)

Wow, you know the cliche 'when it rains it pours.' I guess in your case it was literal. Yet, with all that going on, you got, and accepted, an offer on your house???!!! It's amazing that you received an acceptable offer in less than two weeks. I live in North Las Vegas and after several years of rising prices the 'sellers market' has disappeared. A house two doors down has been on the market for *months* and there are 'for sale' and 'for rent' signs all over the place. It's the same in many cities around the country, so you are very, very fortunate despite that strange day you had.

Best of luck, I do hope you find the right house soon.

Sheila,
I hadn't thought about getting an apartment with a pool. That's a great idea! It would save on us paying for swimming lessons this year!

Thanks for pointing that out!

Reading your news made me feel great all day! Everyone can identify with your ups and downs at least once, I'm sure. At our house, interesting situations seem to appear monthly! The best part was to read that you put your faith in the Lord. Like the idea of an apartment, we did that many times with our company moves. Two thoughts, try to get one in the area you would like to live in, to see if the area really fits your family. Second, with the pool...remember you will have to be with the kids when they go and they will want to go from first light to midnight. This being said from experience. So be prepared with your plan! :) Sometimes with ours, a certain level of behavior, getting along, chores, naps or whatever, had to be done by the time Dad got home. Then Dad took them to the pool, while I did dinner and picked up. After dinner they were worn out and bedtime came easily. :) :)
And after 3 months with some stuff in storage, if you have not missed it,don't take it into your new house. Now that we are settled and don't move every year or so, we have way too much. Take care and your faith is the most important. Oh, and we have stayed in a motel for several weeks waiting for the house too. depends on the motel and your family if it would work out.

I am so excited for you - it's amazing that you sold your home in 11 days. Stepping out in faith is so hard sometimes. My husband and I are currently considering a job change that would be a huge step in faith for us so I can relate. I love your website and cookbook, and will keep your family in my prayers. You and your Mom have been such a help and an inspiration since I found your website! Keep us posted on your progress. :)

I agree with "take time to choose your new home." There are a variety of reasons why this is a good idea.

The idea of renting an apartment with a pool makes a lot of sense, too! It gives you a built-in break spot.

Nine years ago my husband and I, plus 3 children stayed in a hotel for 4 weeks, while waiting to get into our house. That is a mighty expensive proposition, with very little room to breath.

Best of luck to the family, as you plunge in this next chapter of your lives.

Breathe! You are in a great position! This is perfect. You will find something that suits you. God has his hand in this. The housing market stinks right now all over the country. You sold yours in 11 days. that was meant to be! You will find something and it won't take long. Good luck!
