Snowing!! YEAH!!!

WOW, you should see the snow we are having. It's great! The kids went out to play and to keep their feet dry we put walmart sacks over their socks. This way they can play in the snow but their feet don't get wet!

Merry Christmas!

Elfred is back!

If you want a cute idea to get into the Christmas spirit have an elf visit!

Elfred our family elf has been visiting since Thanksgiving. The kids leave him a snack and note and in the morning he leaves them a treat, like a package of cookies, pudding cups etc. Things they don't normally get.

Sometimes he causes mischief like making snow angels in the flour. :-) Or he may clean their room “extra good” for them.

It's a fun way to have a little bit of Christmas everyday with the kids.

More Reader Christmas Tips.

..using things that only cost a few cents to make
the holidays more enjoyable, makes good sense.
*******************************************************
Even children can make a nice smelling accent for
the holidays.
Oranges
Whole cloves
Cloves are pushed through the skin of the whole
orange, at intervals. You can pierce the skin before
inserting cloves, to avoid breaking the cloves.
Lemons or apples can be used instead of oranges.
The smell is heavenly, they last a long time,
simply getting more dry & shrinking as the fruit
dries.
I place mine out of sight, behind something. Until
these day, I put them in glass dishes, so they can't
mar furniture surfaces.
*******************************************************
Thrift stores have the greatest variety of items,
this time of year. I love to find fancy glass plates,
dishes, or Christmas ornaments. These can be
cleaned/sterilized & regifted. Who wouldn't like a
pile of fresh cookies on a beautiful Christmas plate.
Matching the gift to the person's hobby or likes,
is especially fun. A golf cup, with a bag of candy,
or in a basket with hot chocolate, flavored coffees, &
such can be a unique & delightful gift.
*******************************************************
Draft dodgers are great for holding in heat &
keeping out cold. Instead of an old blanket, kicked
in front of the door, I comb fabric departments of
stores for: "after Christmas" sales, & buy Christmas
fabric printed for draft dodgers. During the year I
make & stuff my Christmas themed draft dodgers. Then
adding velcro, (to the door, & corresponding velcro to
the draft dodger) keeps the draft dodger where it
belongs. It looks pretty, & keeps things warm.
*******************************************************
We get more company at Christmas, than the rest of
the year, so I put out a plate of individually wrapped
cakes, in a prominent place. Guests are free to help
themselves, or I'll offer them a hot drink, & we can
sit a moment & chat & enjoy a peaceful moment in the
rush of the season. People seem to really like that.
Having a glass full of individually wrapped candy
canes on the same table, invites guest to have
peppermint in their drink, or to take one for the
road. Since peppermint can be calming to the tummy,
it's a nice addition to a Christmas table of treats.
*******************************************************
When I find some particularly interesting writings,
which I want to share, I frame it, & hang it, at eye
level, in the guest bathroom. Guests often comment on
what is hanging there, & sometimes, someone even asks
for a copy to share with other people. It's an
interesting, & diverting way to add to the usual
decorations in the guest bathroom. In our hurry,
hurry world, it give people a moment to stop &
comtemplate.
*******************************************************
Christmas brings back memories. I try to key to
this, & make treats for people that remind them of
their favorite "Christmas past" treats. If I have the
old recipes, I use them. If not I try to come as
close as I can to making something they loved as a
kid, as I can. This means chatting about favorite
Christmas treats, but the smiles, & joy those treats
bring, is worth the effort. Spending a little time to
find what people want, rather than giving them what I
would want, makes all the difference. Money can't buy
the joy, that good memories brings. It's inexpensive
in money, & only costs a bit more time & caring.
*******************************************************
Unusual "snowflakes" can be made by folding a
square piece of paper (or coffee filter) & cutting
shapes in the folded paper. This can be Chrismon
style (featuring shapes that relate to the Christian
faith) or just random shapes. These look pretty taped
to windows, & children love to make them.
*******************************************************
You e-zine is just terrific. I love the tips, &
love to know other people are catching on to the
"frugal goes farther" idea. It's not how much we
have, but how we use what we have, that makes all the
difference in life.

Christmas Ideas from Readers

Hi, I just finished reading your Christmas note online and wanted to share some of my frugal Christmas ideas for this year.

1. For the past two or three years, I have hosted a Christmas Cookie Exchange at my home about 3-5 days before Christmas. It is on a weekday, and I give plenty of notice. I always have a full house (mostly the moms). Everyone brings 2 or 3 dozen cookies, a container, and extra cookies to share. We fill each container with an assortment of cookies that are brought and thus, each family has a few dozen cookies of different sorts.

Some years, I have given simple, practical handmade gifts. Dad got a table runner last year made from fabric with his favorite football team's logo on it. Mom and favorite Aunt got quilted tote bags in favorite styles. They all get homemade cookies or bread as none of them bake and they love my baking.

This year, at Goodwill, I picked up a book ( 69 cents) that has jar recipes in it. The tags with instructions are already in it so all I have to do is make the recipes and cut out the tags.

I found a small candle lamp at Goodwill (1.99) that is exactly the style of my mom's sunroom. Complete with the shade and it looks brand new.

Also, got a tote bag on sale at a grocery store. It's the kind of bag in which you can put pictures-so mom will get that, too.

Found a brand new, kids word search, very nice (.69) at Goodwill. It will go in Son #1's stocking.

Anyway, some ideas I thought I'd share.

Blessings to you!

Wow! We will have 2/3 of our debt paid off!

Well, I know some of you remember me talking about us paying off our debt. We made some dumb mistakes and bought a car for $6,000 and then had medical bills on top of it. We should have just stuck it out and waited on a $2,000 car but it was a really bad time for us and we were caught while we were weak.

Then we owed $5,000 on the printing of Not Just Beans. Another big mistake but at least it was paying for itself in sales.

Then we owe $7,000 on Mike's video equipment.

Well, we made a decision to pay it all off. We weren't sure how but we were determined to do it. We knew God would give it to us some how.

Well would you believe in the last 2 weeks we have seen enough money come in to pay off the car and the books both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are so excited! The outpouring of support from our readers was way beyond anything we ever dreamed! Thank you so much for letting us know that what we are doing is valuable to you and how much you care!

God has also shown us how miraculously He can work. All we have left is Mike's video equipment.

It is going to be wonderful starting the new year off personally and business debt free.

We have decided to go ahead and keep going for at least another 6 months. We are going to try and finish a couple of books that we are working on but put them in e-book form and do some audio interviews also.

We are going to see if that will be a good way to make income for the business but not be so taxing on our health. This sale was wonderful but it about killed mom and I packing up all those books! There's a reason we are on disability and we need to remember that and stop trying to live like "normal" people. (Not that I was ever normal! LOL)

If we can see some progress being debt free in the business then we will keep it up. We really don't want to quit but we can't keep working 3 people on it and earning a 1 person income. Anyway, Just a note to let everyone know that we are going to "forge on!" (and maybe take some business lessons! ;-)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Wow! We're going CRAZY!

HA! Our Crazy Sale has been much more successful than we ever imagined. We are selling books right and left so that is keeping us VERY busy.

We are selling them at our cost so we won't see much $ from it but it is clearing out the garage so Mike is excited about that! Moving 5,000 books to Colorado if he gets a job was not high on his list of "fun things to do". :-)

Anyway, just an update so you know that I may not be able to post much until next week.

Frugal presents!

We were talking 2 weeks ago to my grandparents about birthday presents. We got BJ a new bike for his birthday. He had outgrown his old one and I found a really nice one for cheap! That was his only present from us but he loves it.

Anyway. My grandparents were saying how when my uncle was little my grandfather would repaint the bike, put on new handle bar cushions and add something new like a bell. They then gave it to my uncle and he thought he had a new bike every year!

They did this for several years! What a hoot! I have done some things sort of similar but not like that! I love it! :-)

BTW, this was my mom's folks who are very frugal too.

Great gift ideas!

I went to some after Halloween sales last week and they had all their fall stuff on clearance too. 75% off! They had the best smelling little jar candles. They were only .25!

I picked up 3 dozen and am going to put 3 in a basket with some tissue and a nice bow. I will have a great teachers gift for about $1.25!!! yeah! We have about 8 teachers to give to with all three kids so that will wonderful!

We are doing well.

I am finally getting caught up. Elly is doing fine and went back to school today. She and BJ were fighting so she has her spunk back. :-)

I'm still worn out but doing better and the housework is getting caught up. We are starting our Crazy Sale tomorrow so I wanted to all done by then so I wouldn't have to worry about it. I will post a few tips and off to bed. :-)

We're home.

Well, we got home last night.

Elly is doing well. She had a small amount of blood on her brain and they wanted to make sure that it went down before they sent her home.

We were very fortunate. The doctor said just a faction the other way and she would have cut her facial nerve.

They also said that we were fortunate that they didn't have to do surgery on the broken bone pieces. Apparently to do that they have to cut most of one side of her head and pull the skin back to get to the skull without damaging that nerve.

God's hand was definitely in this one!

I have to say, the worst part for me is coming home! Trying to play catch when you're worn out is one of the things I hate!

It doesn’t help that we had company all last week, 2 birthday parties and Halloween. We had BJ’s party on Friday and we still have balloons up so we need to clean up that too.

I better run! Off to get the laundry done before we have to start turning the underwear inside out! hehehe

Golf Club Plus Kids Equals Disaster :-(

Hello Everyone,
Tawra asked me to post to the blog to let all of you know that she may not answer e-mail for the next few days.

Yesterday, our kids were outside playing with a golf club and ball and Elly stepped out in front of the golf club when BJ was hitting a ball and was hit in the head. She was hit in the left temple and was injured pretty seriously. The golf club made a deep gash on her left temple and fractured her skull. Thankfully, he did not hit her in the eye.

Tawra spent the night with Elly in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit. It looks like Elly will be OK, but she may be in the hospital a couple more days so they can keep an eye on her. She has some blood on the brain and they want to make sure that situation improves before releasing her.

BJ felt so bad about it. He is the empathetic one and he worried about her all day.

The doctors said that they get a lot of injuries due to kids playing with golf clubs. They said that golf clubs are meant to deliver a lot of power to a small ball and that getting hit with one can be deadly. Needless to say, the golf club has gone away. If you have kids that like golf, don't let them play with adult golf clubs. They have nice little plastic clubs for kids at toy stores ;-). Live and learn!

Can't pay off debt?

I hear people all the time say they can't pay off their debt, they just don't have "any" money.

Well, I announced earlier that we are on the fast track trying to get ours gone....again. :-)

Most of you know the business isn't pulling in the sales we need so Mike has had to get a part time job. We are just making enough to cover our expenses so we weren't sure "where" the extra money was going to come from to pay it off.

1st- Our credit card gave us a $20 credit if we would just "use it". It is 0 balance so there's $20 free we can spend on something and put that money toward debt.

2nd- We just got a check from the state for $135 because we over paid our taxes.

3rd- We got $235 from car insurance that we overpaid and didn't know it.

Right there is $390 that we can send to the card! That's just this week!

It's there if you really want to pay it off. You just have to watch for it.

Tawra

P.S. We are having a HUGE SALE next week! Be watching for it you won't want to miss it!
