Poll Please.

I have a friend who is thinking of making and publishing a new type of address book. She needs to know:

Do you store your addresses and phone numbers in the computer or in an address book or some sort of paper form.

If you wouldn't mind emailing me with the answer it would help a LOT! Just put computer or paper in the subject if it's easiest.

Thanks!!

Rye Crisps

I had a loaf of rye bread that I got for dh on clearance for .50. He never got around to eating and it was going to go bad.
I decided to cut it up into very thin slices and make my own rye crisps.

I sliced them as thin as I could then brushed them with olive oil that had some garlic and onion powder and salt mixed in.
I then dried them in the oven for about 30-45 minutes at 200.

They turned out great! The only thing I would do differently is sprinkle the spices on instead of put it in the oil. I liked the spicier taste so more would have been better.

You could do this with any type of bread. I got about $8 worth of boxed crisps for .50!
Yum!

Paint problem

I figured out what I did wrong on the dresser.
I put kilz on it for primer but it was latex and not oil based. I may try sanding it down and putting oil based on and see if that works. I am almost postive that's what I did wrong. I thought primer, was primer but I guess not!

Kitchen Tip

Tawra,
I noticed that you said on your website that you always keep a papertowel in your shortening, I used to do this as well but now I use an open plastic sandwich bag. I reach into the opening of the bag (which keeps my hands clean) and then use the bag to grease my pans. The plastic bag holds up better than the papertowel, and I've never had to put more than one baggie in the shortening. When I am done greasing my pans, and I still have my hand in the baggie, I sort of spread out my fingers into a claw and then put the baggie back into the shortening, which keeps the top of the baggie open for next time. I love your website BTW- great tips, and it is really making me examine some things in my life.

Great Idea! Thanks!

My huge flop!

Can I cry please?

Today I decided to paint my furniture all the same color. I have the "garage sale" decor. We weren't planning on staying in this house so I didn't paint everything to match like I usually do.

Well, the TV station is coming to interview us next week and so I wanted it to look really good. It doesn't look horrible I just wanted it to look "better".

Anyway, I start painting on one dresser ( a cheap Wal-Mart type that I got at a thrift store for $20) that I have in my kitchen to store stuff like the phone book, bags etc.

I get it all sanded and then started to prime. I discovered a drawer wasn't working so I tried to fix it and broke it into pieces.

Undaunted I finally figured out how to get the pieces glued back together.

I go out to the garage and get several cans of paint. I was going to mix and match from the freebies that I had gotten from the recycling center.

As I'm walking up through house one can drops and the lid comes open and paint dumps all over the carpet!

(Please note I am doing all this with a 2 year old running behind me yacking the entire time!)

I franticly go get the shop vac and some water. I turn on the vac and dirt "poofs" EVERYWHERE! I don't know what I did wrong but something wasn't right. I finally get it fixed and get the paint out of the carpet.

(Note I am doing all this in the middle of my kitchen/living room with about 6 inches to walk and a 2 year old following me. :-)

Still undaunted I go and try mixing the colors. I painted one drawer and didn't like the color so I keep experimenting. Nothing was coming out right. I was thinking about it for a while and let the paint dry.

Well, I went to add another color on top and accidentally scratch the surface with my fingernail. The paint didn't even come close to sticking! Augh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I barely touched my nail on it and it the paint came right off!

So I just gave up. I put white primer all over the paint areas and will just leave it like it is.

I feel like I went around in a huge circle and did nothing but make a mess! LOL

Tawra (who is going to go clean up the mess and try again later!)

Cinnamon Roll Muffins

I got this from the Creative Homemaking Newsletter.
http://www.creativehomemaking.com

They are SUPER yummy! They are wonderful fresh but not as good the next day, although the kids still loved them.
Enjoy! Tawra

Cinnamon Roll Muffins
by LeAnn Ralph

If you love cinnamon rolls but do not have the time or the
inclination to make traditional cinnamon rolls with dough that
has to raise twice before the cinnamon rolls are baked, try this
easy variation.

1 cup milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar added to it
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
3 to 3 1/2 cups flour
soft butter
sugar
cinnamon

Pour milk into a measuring cup and add the lemon juice or
vinegar.

Measure the brown sugar, baking soda, salt, vanilla and egg into
a mixing bowl. Add the milk. Add the flour. Stir until thoroughly
combined.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a
minute or two.

Roll the dough into a 12-inch by 24-inch rectangle. Spread with
butter. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

Roll the dough into a log beginning at the wide side. Stretch the
log slightly. Cut into two-inch pieces and put the pieces into
greased muffin tins or muffin tins lined with cupcake papers. (I
like to use the cupcake papers because the papers make cleaning
the muffin tin that much easier!)

Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or until golden
brown.

Allow the muffins to cool for 5 minutes and then remove them from
the muffin tins.

Recipe makes 1 dozen cinnamon roll muffins.

Paint it all!

My mom painted her ugly bathroom tile about 5 months ago. It looks great and hasn't come off.

I got some colored grout sealer for our white bathroom tile floor. I was thinking that I probably could have saved a bunch of money and just painted the grout instead. I paid $18 for the sealer and could have got a paint to match at the hazardous Waste Facility for free.

Oh well, live and learn!

I am going to paint all my furniture to match this week. The TV station is coming to do a story on us so I want it to match. I have been meaning to do it for awhile anyway so this will give me a reason to get it done. I am going to paint 2 dressers and a pantry cabinet that are in my kitchen/dining room and my kitchen chairs.

This way my "cheap" furniture can all be coordinated.

A New Washer.

Well our washer was dead. We had to get a new one. The good news is I think this one washes better. I got a Whirlpool this time. My last one was only 5 years old, a GE. Why don't they make stuff to last anymore? Ok, I know why they do it but it's just disgusting to put a washer that isn't that old in the dump.

The good news is my brother was hauling some stuff and we were able to use his truck and save $40 on delivery! Yeah!

Bed Wetting Tip.

I do this all the time. We ran out of vinyl tableclothes so I put a trash sack under the sheet. Even though they are older my kids still wet the bed when they get sick so I try to stay prepared now!
Tawra
www.LivingOnADime.com

Tawra
I still have small children that wet the bed. Those pads for the beds are EXPENSIVE! One that does not even cover the entire bed costs $12.00 here. So, I improvised. I put a plastic table cloth over the mattress before I put the sheets, etc., on. This only costs $3.00 from the dollar store and covers an entire full-sized mattress. The felt lined backing they have keep it from slipping all over the place. Some of those expensive pads don't even have that.

So all you mom's going through the potty-training ordeal, save your mattresses for $3.00!!!

Inexpensive tea

I admit, Martha was right!

She did a show on loose tea and how much better it was than the bagged stuff. For years I thought, yeah right, tea is tea.

Well, I got a sample of loose tea and Wow! It's wonderful! The tea bags taste like dirt now! Well, I got a cute little tea pot and strainer for Christmas from mom so I have been trying all kinds of loose tea.

The first place I tried it was $3 an oz. OUCH!

The 2nd place it was $1. Better

But then I went and looked at my favorite spice place sfherb.com and they have bulk tea. I have to buy it by the pound but it was only .50/oz. including shipping! There is a $30 mininum so I will have tea for two years LOL but I love it and do drink it a lot.

I will just put the extra in the freezer until I need it.

By the way the Celestiral Seasonings is $1/oz. on sale with a coupon. So I got a great deal!

Three fixed, Three broken.

I have no idea what is going on with us but we are surely being tested.

Everything is breaking. We had the a/c, ice maker and the dryer break on the same day last week. I know ice isn't necessary but when it's 95 in your house it sure is nice. Well, thankfully we got that fixed ourselves and then the a/c was fixed. Yeah!

Yesterday I decided to hang my white clothes on the rack outside since it was so nice and stuff isn't drying fast enough in the house on the racks to keep up with the laundry. Well, I looked out the window and my two racks of white clothes had blown all over the driveway. Did I mention we live on a dirt road? :-) So I insisted we put up the clothesline IMMEDIATELY! We went out and did and got that fixed. Yeah!!

We were on a roll so Mike decided to tear the dryer apart and look at it and see if we could fix it. I might mention that handyman he is not, but we don't have the money so we figured it wouldn't hurt to look. Well after tearing apart, and cleaning it all out (which it needed badly) I look inside the drum and find a screw had lodged in between where the drum turns. That's what I get for putting stuff in my pockets! Augh! But the good news is the dryer is fixed and cleaned out! Yeah!!!!

Well, today I start washing the clothes trying to get caught up. On the first load I discoverd the washer isn't working. The thing that agitates is loose. Well, now we are going to try and figure that out.

We decided to wait for a while since mom took David this morning so we could get some stuff done on the book. Well, we have the newspaper coming to do a story on us tomorrow and the TV station in 2 weeks and so I need to clean the house really well and decluttered. It's not bad but you know how stuff lays around and you just don't get around to putting it up.

We sleep in what is really the family room. Our house is a bi-level and when you walk right in the front door you can see the bedroom. It wouldn't be so bad but the wall by the door has all our exercise equipment, mitten box, and other misc. where we didn't have anywhere to put.

Well, we decided to move it and put the couch that is in the room there so it doesn't look so cluttered when you walk in the door. As we were moving my dresser I broke the leg! Augh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then the brakes went out on our white car so we are done to one car. It's not too bad since Mike is working at home but still it's frustrating!

Of course my allergies are so bad I can hardly breathe and I'm in pain from my Fibromyalgia.

I must admit I am fighting discouragement and depression. I keep repeating:

2 Chronicles 20:15
....: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.

2 Chronicles 20:17
You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'

I know in my head that some good is going to be coming out of this and that life isn't that bad I could be living somewhere like India with earthquakes and tsunami's but my heart just isn't getting it. I really do know that I have so much to be thankful for but I just am not feeling it. I really need to learn how to not listen to my feelings and to know that the "I know that truth and it shall set me free".

Well, that's my vent for the day. I need to get to work and stop having a pity party. :-)

We have A/C!

Yeah! The a/c guy came and it was only $100!!!

We are so excited. It was getting really hot this week. Our house was 95 at one point and we thought we would croak! I don't know how those pioneer women did it! No wonder they all look depressed in the pictures!

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that it's up and running again!

Popsicle Tip

My 2-year-old was having a popsicle and it was running all over his hand because he couldn't manage to eat it fast enough. I grabbed a muffin cup liner (those paper/foil things that line our tins) and cut a small slit in it and placed the stick of his pop in it and his hand stayed much cleaner. All the drips went into the liner. (P.S. This works best with the foil ones because if they are really slow at eating it, the paper ones don't hold up.)

What a weekend!

Wow, we had a really good but HOT Easter.

Our a/c broke down last Tuesday and it's been in the 90's here since Wednesday. (That's just not right!) Our house gets very hot! It was 95 in here Saturday, with the shades pulled and all the fans on. We were going to not fix the central air and just put in our window unit but the way our house is set up (it's a bi-level) we are pretty sure it won't cool it enough.

They can't come and fix it until tomorrow.

We think we may have to get a new unit. :-( The thing is 15 years old so it might be best but this is the worst time right now without any income coming in!

My dryer died too! We never put up a clothesline here because we thought we were going to move but that was 3 years ago. My SIL decided to get rid of hers so they dug it up and brought it over to us. I will be able to use that now. Since it's so humid here stuff just isn't drying on the racks fast enough in the basement so I'm getting behind on the laundry.

That's the bad news. The good news is, that we figured our taxes and instead of owing 5K we will only owe 3K now! Yeah!

We sat and figured today that we now have 2 months worth of income left and we thought we only had 2 weeks left! God is good. I have had friends praying for the money to be stretched and he did it! (Thanks Angel and everyone else who was praying for us!)

Things are still progressing slowly but hopefully they will pick up soon. We are having problems learning the website programs. Please keep us in your prayers. We really do want to make a go of it with this business we just need to keep our encouragement up and try to hang on until Oprah calls. LOL

Debt Diet Cooking School

Debt Diet Cooking School

I spoke to Lisa from Oprah's Debt Diet on the phone yesterday. (a very nice lady by the way!) She had some questions about getting started cooking and cutting her grocery bill. I am going to share some of the notes about what we talked about.
Enjoy!
Tawra Jean
www.LivingOnADime.com

She asked how to cut her grocery budget from $880 a month they budgeted her down even more.
She said was frustrated using coupons and quit. She took my book to the store and was able to save more than she did messing with coupons. Here's part of her email.

"I am looking forward to the tips, enjoyed shopping with your book on yesterday versus using coupons and groceries came to 105.00 and my budget is 220.00 per week."

Shopping at Aldi’s

I spend $250 a month on groceries. The best way is to do most of your food shopping at Aldi’s. I only use about 5 coupons a year! By shopping at Aldi’s I can get the best price without the hassle of coupons.

Aldi’s is a small discount warehouse store. It is not an outlet store selling outdated or rejected products. They offer a double your money back guarantee for all of their products. If you don’t like it, they will give you your money back plus a new item. The foods are mostly Aldi brand foods. I have only had one or two items where my family preferred the name brand over the Aldi brand.

Here is the link to their website to see if one is near you.
http://www.aldi.com/

There are a few rules to follow:

1- They accept only cash, debit or food stamps.
2- You bag your groceries. Bring your own bags. Put all your extra plastic sacks in an empty tissue box and bring it with you. You can also use the boxes they have there. If they don’t have any boxes available and you forget your bags, they charge $.10 per bag for you to buy them.
3- You have to pay a .25 deposit to get a shopping basket. There is a little quarter machine on the basket. When you return your basket, it gives you the quarter back. This keeps prices down because they don’t have to pay someone to get baskets.

By shopping at Aldi, I get two weeks worth of groceries for $100. I am in and out in 30 minutes including bagging my groceries. Plan for longer the first time.

Milk and Meat
I purchase milk for $1 a gallon and don’t pay more than $2/lb for meat. I found out that my grocery store marks milk down to $1 a gallon when it will expire in one week. They mark it down on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons.

Ask the dairy worker when they mark down the milk at your store. I buy extra milk and store it in my freezer. I remove a small amount off the top and keep it in the fridge so that it doesn’t leak out of the milk jug in the freezer. (Milk expands when frozen.)

I wait for meat to go on sale for $2/lb. or less. Whatever is on sale is what we eat. I stock my freezer so that I usually have a variety of items at any given time. Ask your butcher when they mark down their meat that needs to be sold that day. You can find some great deals going at those times and purchasing meat. Meat is good 3-4 days past the “SELL BY” date when you keep it in the refrigerator.

Lisa "Where do you purchase your cleaning supplies?"

Tawra - Don’t purchase your cleaning supplies at the grocery store unless they are on sale. Buy them only at discount stores such as Walmart, Dollar General or Dollar Tree (everything is $1).

Lisa "How do I save time cooking?"

Tawra -
Invest in a crockpot if you don’t have one. (They didn't give her one when they helped her set up her kitchen with all the stuff on the show)

Make meals that are simple.

Here are a couple of examples.

Make three meals from one roast. Here is the link to the recipes below.

http://www.livingonadime.com/articles/recycleroast.htm

You can also do this with chicken. Make roast chicken one day, chicken and dumplings the next day and chicken soup the last day.

When chopping things like onions and peppers, chop extra and have them ready for the following nights meals.

Make a large pot of rice and keep the extra to use the rest of the week.

Make as many shortcuts like that as you can and you will save yourself a lot of time and money.

Our Easter

Well, today I went shopping for Easter basket fillings. I thought I would share what we are doing for Easter.

Clothes
I found BJ a suit 2 years ago at a yard sale for $3. It will fit him this year.
Elly- I got a dress at the thrift store for $2 and a hat at the $1 store.
David will wear something he already has. I couldn't find a small suit for him although I sure would have loved to see him in one!

Baskets:
Last year I bought after Easter, Easter grass (.20), extra plastic eggs (.25), and a couple of small toys ($1). I bought them a water balloon set at Big Lots for $5. I also had M&M's on clearance after Halloween for $1. I got David a bubble blower for $3. I will fill in with another bag or two of candy for about $3.

We are going to have an Easter brunch and egg hunt after church with my brother and his family and my grandparents from Colorado. (Yes, we did just see them last month on spring break. :-)

Then we are going to have a water fight afterwards since it will be almost 90. (Augh! That's just not right!)

We will decorate eggs with some kits I got last year for $1 and homemade egg dye.

That's what we are doing this year.

Happy Easter!

Magazines

This is how I deal with magazines.
by Jill
www.LivingOnADime.com

Limit how many magazines you subscribe to. Not only will it save you money but also time and clutter. I know what it is like to love reading magazines but you have to be honest. If you don’t have time to read them or can’t find them when you want them then what good are they?
One thing I learned as a young mom was to use my library. On those days when I just had to “get away from it all” I would go to the library and sit it the peace and quiet reading magazines. If there was an article I needed I would copy it and on rare occasions when there were several things I liked in it I would buy the magazine at the stands.

For the magazines I do subscribe too this is the way I deal with them.
1. I try to read them right away. Preferably within the week I receive them. Take them with you while waiting to pick up the kids from school, the doctors office, keep in the car while waiting for a train or between appointments.

2. I tear out the article I want to keep which I put into a file folder that is kept on my desk.

3. When the folder is full I have a small file box divided into categories. At night when I’m watching TV, or sitting with the kids doing homework I file everything away. I do this every time the folder gets full. If I don’t I become overwhelmed. Control yourself, if the folder is full you can’t add more articles. You have to throw them out! So file the things away regularly.
Though I limit my articles to 1 file box, I realize some of you may need more room. You can use a filing cabinet or a small filing box for each category. The filing boxes then can be placed on some shelving. Be sure to label them clearly.
What categories you divide your articles into depends on your own interests and tastes. Here are some of the categories I divide mine into:
Decorating
Gardening
Sewing
Home remodeling
Children
Cooking
Crafts
Scrapbooking
I then sub-divide those again. For example if I have a file box with Decorating I then would divide it into kitchen, bath, bedrooms, etc. In the Sewing file box I would have folders such as quilting, crocheting, knitting etc.
Once again adjust it to your own needs. A gardener would divide theirs into trees, flowers, compost, bugs etc.

Last but most important is throw the magazine out, give it to someone else to read or give to the thrift store. If you have a friend or relative that enjoys the same types of magazines you do then share the subscriptions. One person subscribe to one magazine and the other person to another magazine. Then swap with each other. If there is something you want to keep in your friends magazine ask if they want it and if they do then just make a copy of it.

I am so excited!

I admit after the first show I wasn't sure this lady would turn around but by the third show I could see she was really trying. I got this email and just had to share! I am so glad that I was able to help her make it easier!
Tawra

Tawra,

This is Lisa Bradley for the Oprah debt diet show!! I received your book from Glinda at the taping of the show today!! I have been reviewing the book and it is awesome!! I would recommend this book to the world. You have no idea of how much I have been needing this and it is going to make all the difference. I have never had a book where I can use 100% of its contents. You are amazing!! I can go on and on so I will stop here and just say THANK YOU and I will enjoy making these meals. I must admit, I will have to purchase those staples pieces but it will go a long way. Also, I have been trying the coupon game--what a headache and this will make life easier for me as a mother of two with a pretty demanding job. Again, thank you for caring enough to share your blessings. May God bless you and have a great day!

Penny Saver

A penny saver is not a penny pincher.

A penny saver get the same services for less money without sacrificing quality.
They find the best deal by comparing companies to replace the air conditioner.

A penny pincher is just cheap.
They turn off the a/c at a certain time of year not matter how hot it gets.

Flavored Tea

To make flavored tea add a package of flavored drink mix to each pot of tea.

www.LivingOnADime.com

Go to bed.

After to talking to a reader the other day I realized just how important getting sleep is if you want to save money.

Why?

If your tired you don't feel like:

cooking
shopping for the best price
saying no to the kids when they want stuff
saying no to yourself
loosing weight so you have to buy a bigger size.

It is so important to get a good nights rest.

Go to bed at 10:00 and get up at 6:00. Once you get in the habit it will be so easy.

Sorry for the lack of posts.

I'm sorry that I've been slow in my posting lately.

We have been trying to get the new newsletter up and had major problems. Mom and I are trying to get the new organizing book finished so we can put it on the website in a few weeks and everything has been taking about 4 times longer than we thought it would.

We are trying not to panic but we only have one month's income left and sales have been slow. We need to sell 15 books a day and we are selling about one. Those numbers just don't work out. LOL

If you would please pray for us. We are fighting discouragement and need all the help we can to keep going.

Thanks!!
Tawra

One problem solved.

I just had to share that we have figured out one of our constant illness problems. Mike has always had a hard time breathing. Not bad, he just was always taking deep breaths all the time. We thought it was allergies. The doc said it was asthma but the meds didn't work.

Well, we discovered he is sensitive to MSG. The whole time and we never knew it! He has been off it for a week now and hasn't had a breathing problem since!

God was good in showing us that! It's been a problem for years, we just couldn't figure it out.

Hamburger

I never thought I would be excited to see hamburger go on sale.

It's been almost $3/lb. here. There is no way I'm paying that much for hamburger. Chicken has been $1.34-$1.69/lb so we have been eating a lot of chicken.

Well, while we were in Colorado hamburger went on sale for $1/lb. I got 40 lbs for me, mom and SIL. I put it in my grandmother's freezer and they are coming out next week so they will bring it for me. If you wrap it in newspaper it stays rock hard and won't defrost and I can just put it in my freezer.

That was a deal I just couldn't pass up!

10 Garage Sale Shortcuts

10 Garage Sale Shortcuts- by Tawra Kellam and Jill Cooper

1. There are two kinds of garage sales – the ones where people want to make money and the ones where people want to get rid of stuff. The object is to find the ones where people want to get rid of stuff.

2. Get a map and newspaper and map out your route. Photo copying maps from a phone book works great. Using this method, you can easily visit 25 sales an hour. If you're a beginner you might hit neighborhoods you are familiar with first.

3. If at all possible leave the kids at home. If you must take them use a baby backpack or an umbrella stroller to make it easier. Give older children 25 or 50 cents and let them see what good deals they can get. Kids love picking out gifts for grandparents, siblings, parents and other family and bargain hunting helps them learn about money. Bring snacks (animal crackers, cearals, crackers in plastic bag works well) and cold water for everyone and plan ahead for potty breaks. If you have children with you, it's best only to plan on hitting about five sales until you see how they do.

4. Wear cool, comfortable clothes. Bring lots of change and one dollar bills. Put your money in your pockets so you don’t have to worry about carrying your purse. Also bring a tote bag in which to carry your finds as you walk.

5. When you find something you're not sure you want, pick it up and carry it around while you continue looking. Otherwise someone else may take it while you're trying to decide.

6. Always ask politely if they will come down on the price. Most of the time they will. Every once in a while some things are so reasonable that I do not feel right asking for less. Finding women's sweater's at $1.00 each isn't bad, but I still ask if they will take 50 or 75 cents. If I find a name brand sweater in perfect shape for 25 cents, I don't ask for less.

7. If there is something you really want, but the seller is asking more than you want to pay, offer them a lower price. If they say no, leave your name and number and ask them to consider selling it to you at your price if they still have it at the end of the day.

8. Always check items well for hard to see tears, stains, or breakage. Remember it is a garage sale so everything won't be perfect.

9. It is best to go early, but don't panic if you can't. Sometimes you get the best buys after lunch when sellers are tired and don't want to have to drag everything back into the house. It’s great to go on the last day of a sale because most sellers will almost pay you to take things so they don’t have to keep them.

10. If you don’t have success in one part of town, try somewhere else the next time. Sometimes the best garage sale neighborhoods are the ones you don’t expect.
