Reader Question.

Tawra,

I have an inquiry that I would love for you to throw out there, into cyberspace.

I am having some sort of topical allergic reaction. It may be seasonal, altho at 51, I never suffered from allergies before. My doc did say an allergy can spring up at any point in life.

My question is about any sort of homemade relief for very itchy dry skin on my face. At times my eyes itch, as well.

Of course, there is no substitute for sound medical advice and I am in touch with the docs in my life - I have an oncologist, a cardiologist and a GP. The logistics of going to the doc are almost staggering, so I am hoping to come up with a way to control these symptoms on my own.

My son and I also have bad allergies. Have you changed your laundry detergent or shampoo? If not, call the company to make sure they have not changed the formula. Costco changed their "Free and Clear" laundry soap and right away, my son's eczema was worse. Now we are back with All Free and Clear. Any oatmeal type of soap seems to work best for us on the face. Cetephil is also very good.

Good luck

I also have to be careful of what kind of laundry detergent my clothes get washed in. Tide w/ Bleach makes my skin extremely dry and itchy. I can't use scented lotions or soaps on my hands, b/c it makes my eczema act up. Even some unscented soaps make my eczema worse. For example, Jergens soap will irritate my skin, but I have tried at least one of their lotions that does not irritate my skin at all, and even helps it somewhat (still have to use medication for it though).

Try to figure out what is causing the problem is the best solution. As we age we seem to be more suceptible to allergies. The previous comments are a good place to start.

I agree, absolutely, that I need to find out what's causing this allergic reaction.

I appreciate the input, thanks everyone.

Allergies that affect the skin often cause it to dry out. What kind of measures, either cosmetic or nutritionally oriented(vitamins/supplements) can help with skin hydration?

Tawra,

Please pass this on to Christine.

Christine,
The only soap my daughter's ped. would allow her to use, while
experiencing eczema symptoms, was dove soap. We also had to give up dryer
sheets as they aggravated the condition, and switched to ivory snow or
dreft. I cannot personally use any kind of bar soap, I get a rash and
itch all over, but body wash doesn't seem to bother me much.

One question before I go. If you have an oncologist, are you currently
undergoing chemotherapy? Is it possible to be reacting to it?

Best wishes,
Kathy

Kathy,

I have non hodgkins lymphoma and have achieved a strong partial remission :)

This time around, I was treated with Rituxan, which is immunotherapy. It stays in the system for months, so the possibility that it could be influencing my current discomfort is there.
