Hamburger
I never thought I would be excited to see hamburger go on sale.
It's been almost $3/lb. here. There is no way I'm paying that much for hamburger. Chicken has been $1.34-$1.69/lb so we have been eating a lot of chicken.
Well, while we were in Colorado hamburger went on sale for $1/lb. I got 40 lbs for me, mom and SIL. I put it in my grandmother's freezer and they are coming out next week so they will bring it for me. If you wrap it in newspaper it stays rock hard and won't defrost and I can just put it in my freezer.
That was a deal I just couldn't pass up!

Good thinking!! There are so many creative ways to save.
When I was a kid, we grew our own beef and usually butchered once a year. Then for a treat my parents would take a package or two of steaks and a roast with them to my grandparents in California. They did just like your grandparents will do and put it in the middle of their suitcases. We have also swapped frozen asparagus for berries with relatives from another part of the state. It's a three hour drive so again, the ice chest keeps things nicely for that amount of time.
Wow, that's a great buy! What percentage of fat? I usually buy 85% for things like meatballs or hamburgers. The leaner stuff just doesn't taste as good. I've never found it that cheap, but sometimes I can get a chuck steak or roast for a reasonable price, and I have a meat grinder. The other day I added ground pork tenderloin to the ground beef and everyone areed the meatballs came out great.
