Even though we try not to let the kids use more than one cup a day we were still washing 10-15 cups a day! Some were ones we found outside from them dragging them out there and David getting them out when I didn’t see but still that's way too many.
At Walgreens I saw some plastic cups that had a wide bottom and don't tip over as easy. (Why do they make cups that are wider on top than bottom? They always tip over.) There was one blue and one red. I got each of them and gave them to BJ and Elly and these are the only cups they can use now, except for BJ coffee's. (yes, my 7 year old drinks coffee but we only allow one cup a day. Nana started him on that!)
Anyway, for the past 2 days it has been working very well. I also told them that if I catch them using another one it will cost them .25. :-)
That will hopefully curb all the cup usage!!

G'day Tawra,
I agree about the cups, but don't forget that they are supposed to stack more easily if they are wider at the top.
My problem is getting my daughter to automatically empty out her school bag every afternoon when she comes home.
In the School Holidays, I've gone into her room and found a few, uh, "interesting" bits of plasticware usually centred around a lunchbox with decaying food in it.
Same with the bag itself.
I think I'll have to make a policy that on Saturday mornings she is to present the bag to me cleaned out by her. lol

I too feel like we use too many cups. Actually, I think I probably spend about 60-70% of my day in the kitchen--either cooking or cleaning. We don't eat out AT ALL, and feeding six people three meals/day is a huge task. Plus, I've been babysitting my friend's three children three days a week and so I AM in the kitchen the whole time! Is it supposed to be this way? Does anyone else live in their kitchen?
Anyway, I wrote to say, the 25 cents thing is a good idea. I guess I'll have to implement it over here.
Thanks,
Lisa
Leonie, It's funny you said that about emptying out her bag on Saturdays. We just wrote yesterday in the new book that one of the chores for kids on Saturday should be emptying all their bags from the week before.
I guess I should have rephrased what I said, I guess stacking is the main reason they make them that way. :-) They are sure making some skinny bottoms on some of those kids cups. I am thinking the people who design these aren't cleaning up spills all day long! LOL

Lisa,
When we go to my moms or grandma's they always write everyone's names on a plastic (disposable) cup. Of course we wash them out and use them over and over but that way everyone has their own cup and grandma doesn't have to mess up her good ones. (yes, she washes them and saves them until we come again in 6 months or a year. That’s where we get the frugal gene.)
I would say you are doing good if you are only in the kitchen all day (and not all night too) feeding that many people.
Actually it depends on what you are making and how old your kids are. If my kids are around it takes me about 1 1/2 hours to get breakfast made, eat and get cleaned up from the interruptions. If I do it all by myself it takes about 15 minutes and that's making pancakes. (10 mins. making them and 5 mins. cleaning up. I didn't include eating time. 20 or so.)
With a 2 year old yelling "poopy" for 2-4 hours at a time and having to run him to the toilet every 2-3 minutes it's very difficult to get anything done at all!
Don't be too hard on yourself!! It sounds like you aren’t doing that badly. My kids are constantly hungry this summer and they are driving me nuts! I’m a cookbook author so you would think I would be able to keep up with their consumption of food but I’m not. On the days when it’s not 100 plus degrees out I try to make a double batch of muffins in the morning and let them snack on those all day. That helps some. Anyway, once again don’t be too hard on yourself!!!!!!!!

By the way I will explain more in a new post about the .25 rule.
