The .25 rule.

-----------------------------
We have a .25 rule in our house. If you leave your shoes out and not in the basket then it's going to cost you .25. The same goes with coats, clothes, toys etc. Pretty much anything that is theirs gets charged if it's not put up properly.
I am lenient on this in some areas. If they don't get their clothes put on the shelf or hung nicely but it's in the general area I don't worry about it, yet. That will change in about 6 months or a year when they get older and can manage the hangers better.
I give them a warning on the toys that are left out. All the toys can stay out (within reason) for the day if they are playing with them but must be picked up before bed.
We started this rule with new cups. If you don't use "your cup" for the entire day and you get a fresh one it's going to be .25 for dishwashing services, even if it is put in the dishwasher.
This can be used for any area that you are having a problem with.
My kids get an allowance once a week for $1. They can also earn money doing extra chores around the house. They usually don't, but if they want something then they have the chance to earn it.
We are not perfect by any means with this system but it does help cut down a lot on the mess.
